Introduction
Social research is a method popularly used by researchers as well as social scientists in order to learn about societies as well as individual’s behaviours. Social research can also be considered as a data collection methods in order to cater variable needs of individuals, which helps social researchers to design respective products or services.
Therefore, this paper will be focussing on the importance of social research and efforts will be made to present the association of inductive and deductive approaches in social research. Further, contribution of social research will be discussed by considering an example from prevalent social issue.
Social Research and Its Importance
Social research is an essential source of knowledge and it has the potential to open new horizons of wisdom as well as knowledge for the social researchers. It would be essential to understand that researchers seek unknown knowledge as well as facts and social research provides knowledge to the researcher concerning unknown facts. Besides, the society is built up with variable socio-economic groups with distinct identity as well as views.
In other words, different socio-economic groups from different parts of the country think differently and can have different views. Therefore, social research helps social researchers by providing them with required data for development of products and services (Hughes & Sharrock, 2016). Social research is also known to bring structural changes in the social life.
This is majorly because the people living in the society are responsible for bringing social as well as cultural changes in the society and it can be a resultant of social research. Social research can also prove to be useful concerning the removal of social evils. The process of social welfare can be made possible through social research as it can help to present the required data in order to highlight the situation and enlighten the need for removal of social evil.
Research Paradigm and Major Types
It would be essential to consider that every research can have a philosophical underpinning and no social research or any other research can proceed within a philosophical vacuum. There are two common perspectives, which are popularly used in social research and these are ‘Positivist’, ‘Constructivism’, ‘Pragmatism’ and ‘Interpretivism’.
Positivism
Positivism is an ideology, which is followed in philosophical research and it adheres majorly to ‘factual’ knowledge collected through observations as well as measurements. Positivism ideology promotes that scientific knowledge is derived from accumulation of data; therefore, anything, which cannot be observed or measured is of little or no importance (Gunasekare, 2015).
Constructivism
Constructivism philosophical paradigm is an approach, which asserts that every individuals construct their knowledge as well as understanding towards this world, through their real life experiences, along with reflections on those experiences.
