Motivation in a business organisation is one of the foundational pillars as it helps to improve the productivity of the employees and therefore enable an organisation to achieve higher levels of output. Here, an effort has been made to summarise the contents of chapter 5 and chapter 6 of Organizational Behaviour by John Schermerhorn 11th edition. The two chapters discuss about motivation theories and motivation and performance. The two chapters provide an in-depth understanding of motivation and various theories associated with it and the impact of motivation on the performance of the employees. The main topics that have been covered in chapter 5 include motivation and various theories associated with motivation. Chapter 6 includes topics focusing on the impact of motivation on the performance of the employees.
Chapter 5 starts with a basic definition of motivation, which shall help the readers to brush up their foundational concepts of the topic so that the advanced theories associated with motivation can be understood in a better manner. According to Schermerhorn (1991), motivation can be defined as an internal force that accounts for direction, persistence and level of efforts put in by individuals at work. Moving further, the chapter discusses about the type of motivation theories and primarily sheds light on two types of motivation theories namely content theories and process theories. Content theories focus on individual needs that regulate the behaviour of individuals in a workplace. These theories primarily include the work of Maslow, Alderfer, McClelland, and Herzberg. Process theories on the other hand examines the thought processes of the workers that affect the decisions made by them about alternative course of action. Process theories are further bifurcated into equity theory and expectancy theory. The chapter also highlights the fact that specific aspects of work motivation vary from one culture to another culture.
