Appraisal & Validation in Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM)







For this assignment, the student will use IESVE for an energy analysis study.


The student should demonstrate an ability to utilise software in order to identify, formulate, and analyse problems associated with passive and low energy building design. The student should demonstrate the ability to design building components and hence influence building heat transfer processes to meet specific design criteria. The student should demonstrate an ability to apply to redesign spaces in order to improve building energy loads. The submission should include a write up of not more than 3000 words.


The student is free to design any type of building they wish and study any area for energy improvements. For example, the assignment could focus on any of the following.




  • solar shading



  • u-values



  • glazing types



  • glazing areas



  • global location



  • massing



  • orientation
    Perform a Dynamic Simulation on the building and comment on the relevant results. Make design changes with a view to minimising running costs and carbon emissions and again, comment on all results. Thermal comfort of occupants should be considered at all stages.
