Sustainable Systems Assignment No.2
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Due
date: 09 Oct 2022 11:59 PM
Word
limit: 2000 to 3000 words
Hints
for writing a report:
Executive summary should summarize the information in the powerpoint within 1-2
slides. You should use
Harvard WesternSydU
referencing
style. Refer the guide from the WSU library website
(https://library.westernsydney.edu.au/main/guides/referencing-citation) for
referencing. Work should be your original work.
This
section requires you to write a report as a way of answering questions. Please
consider the following scenario based on your ID. N is the last digit of your ID.
(N=4 in my case)
For
question 2, please select a house base on your ID number (ID ending with 0-1,
NSW; ID ending with 2-3, VIC; ID ending with 4-5, South Australia, ID ending
with 6-7, NT, ID ending with 8-9, QLD). Use domain/real estate application tool/website
to find the household/residential building floor plan.
In
addition, the house has the following characteristics:
No of
people = (1 + whole number of (N/2)) (both husband and wife are working from 9
AM to 4 PM and each travels separately by car on average N*5 km; kids walk to
school between 9 AM and 3 PM but all reaches home at around 5 PM).
For
other uses, car travels N*11 km per week on average. Car uses the petrol at 8 +
N*0.4 Km/L. The average cost for petrol is $1.2/L
Cook
top and hot water uses LPG gas. Energy obtained from gas use is around 90+N*5
MJ/day and the gas utility bills every three months as follows:

Find the
appropriate pricing of electricity charges from your internet research, and
list as part of the report. Mark counted with other parts.
Every
person on an average uses 4 hr of lighting in the house. Assume all the lights
are incandescent (70 W) for odd N values; and 50% incandescent (70 W) + 50% of
tube bulb (40 W) for even N values.
Assume
the house has some insulation (can tolerate 18±0.5
oC, has
single-layered glass window) for N values 0-4; and good insulation (can
tolerate 18±N*0.5
oC has single layered glass window) for N values
5-9. Air conditioner (A/C) runs when the Tmax, average is above the tolerable
temperature. Use typical monthly temperature (Tmax, average
=(
monthly
average high + monthly average low)/2) as shown in Figure 1 (Please use similar
type monthly temperature for your selected state). A/C only works when all the
people are in the home, i.e from 6 PM to 12 AM on weekdays and anytime between
6 AM and 12 AM during weekends depending on the temperature. A/C consumes 2500
+200*N W when it runs. Chose appropriate approximations and calculation
procedure as needed.
Figure 1: Average monthly temperature in
Parramatta, Bureau of Meteorology, Australia, 2020. Please try to find similar average
monthly temperature for your selected state.
The Question number must include while
writing an answer!
1
Executive
summary (Overall energy efficiency scenario of the assignment. Please prepare
1-2 slide presentation and attach to the report) (3%)
2
Literature
summary on the status of Australian energy use and soft tools:
2a. Search the
internet / use Australian Energy Update 2021 report to summarise the energy
consumption, energy production, sources of energy, per capita energy use, and
per capita carbon emission in Australian states. Please select a state base on
your student ID number (ID ending with 0-1, NSW; ID ending with 2-3, VIC; ID
ending with 4-5, South Australia, ID ending with 6-7, NT, ID ending with 8-9,
QLD). (4%)
2b. Compare the current
renewable energy sources and production scenarios in your chosen state with
overall Australia. (3%)
2c. Soft tools are very important to change
the behaviour of the public. Develop a strategy to reduce fossil fuels in your selected
state using soft tools (financial, regulatory, and social). Please use relevant
news articles or references to validate your argument. (3%)
2d. What
is greenwashing? Discuss the pros and cons of greenwashing using appropriate
examples of greenwashing.
Please use relevant news
articles or references to validate your argument. (3%)
3
Analysis
of Energy Efficiency for household:
3a. Describe the location/position of your selected
households. Provide a sketch similar to the one provided in the workshop
handout (hand drawn sketch is fine). (2%)
3b. Quantify all the energy-consuming devices in the
households. Also includes car, cooktop and AC energy consumption. Calculate the
annual energy consumption (in KWh) and CO2
emission (metric ton - CO2
equivalent) for your case in a Tabular form. Show all calculations and diagrams
of the households. Please use relevant online information for cost/ energy-consuming
devices to validate your argument (6%)
3c. Identify all relevant information regarding
possible alternatives and identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption.
For this, use especially CO2 emission and cost of the devices and compare them
in the tabular form. (4%)
3d. Perform the cost-benefit analysis (real payback
period with 15% per annum interest; id ending with odd number and simple
payback id ending with even number) for two improvement options. Please attach excel
or a sample calculation sheet in the answer script. (4%)
3e. Conclude the best option of the two in (g).
Provide reasoning (i.e., in terms of energy efficiency, cost, environmental
benefit, % reduction in per-capita CO2
emission and energy
consumption) (2%)
3f. References and formatting of the report (Provide in-text
citation in the report) (1%)
