ASSIGNMENT 1: THREE DISTINCT PERSPECTIVES OF APPLIED ETHICS
Name:
Student Number:
WORD COUNT: 1548
1. Introduction
Ethics is the branch of study, which deals with morals and behavior of individuals. It is used to guide the human behavior and demarcate t
he differences between wrong and right conduct. It explains that although people’s perspective may be different but there are some universal ethical principles which must be followed for the long-term benefit of whole society. In the given article, it will be discussed the social media platform provider Twitter case from various ethical perspective, where it allegedly censored the free speech and repudiated the basic human right of freedom of expression.
Media Article: Forbes, (2018) Is Twitter Really Censoring-Free Speech Retrieved from https://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2018/01/12/is-twitter-really-censoring-free-speech/#3f0bed3c65f5
2. Professional Ethics Perspectives
Professional Ethics are the standard of behavior expected to be followed within the corporate field. In the professional corporate world, organizations are concerned about their top and bottom-lines. As stated by Belle (2017), in the pressure to meet the deadlines or to gain some advantage over competitors, organizations and their leaders often walk along the thin line of difference between ethical and non-ethical activities and face the ethical dilemma situations.
As stated by Statache et al. (2015), internet is the open and fair platform where people can freely express themselves on various platforms like Facebook and Twitter. However, there were recent reports which claimed that Twitter abused its open and free platform and selectively deleted the posts and entire accounts of the user, thus limited the human rights of freedom of expression. The facts based on which posts and accounts were selected for partial deletion or restriction was never disclosed, thus raising the ethical issue over the real motive (Forbes, 2018). Twitter has remained silent over the issue and never cleared the basis on which they did the partial censorship. It would have been ethical if they had specified the exact rules and conditions for censorship, however, company had largely remain silent on these issues (DesJardins, 2014).
The real ethical issue is that online platforms to communicate are becoming more and more black opaque boxes without people’s knowledge and the right to talk for about third of this world’s population is being decided by handful of organizations. The real motive behind their act is not clear, but it may be due to company’s political or corporate affiliation or their own hidden-agenda, as selective censorship can be used to generate specific public opinion and manipulatively influence the public beliefs about any issue (Grant, Arjoon & McGhee, 2017).
Twitter did not respond when it was asked to release its full set of manuals, tutorials, documentation work, thus it maintained in-transparency over its operations and did not specify any justifiable reason for its refusal to respond. Similarly, they have refused to release aggregate demographics details of content review staff like their gender, country-of-origin, race; language, social or religious affiliation, which would have refuted the claims of content review staff’s biasedness. Maintaining transparency in the work-operations is sine-qua-non for the ethical business.
3. Philosophical Ethics Perspectives
As mentioned by Tavani (2013), philosophical perspective to ethics concerns itself with its influence on...
