TC 4300 Lab Assignment ITM332, Spring Semester 2023 Due on April 10, 2023 Measuring response times will give you an indication of the round-trip delay in a computer network. In this lab, you will use three protocols: ping, ipconfig and tracert, to measure round-trip delay, the loss rate, and the number of hops. Warm up for the lab: · Open a Command Prompt box (You may want to maximize the window) · Type ipconfig/all, read/record the listing text and find your computer’s IP address and the default gateway’s · Type "ping –n 10 ufl.edu", (ping the website of University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, for 10 times) · Inspect the results. You should get 10 responses like: Reply from 128.227.9.98: bytes = 32 time = 85ms TTL = 240 · Ping sends the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) "Echo Request" message to the host you specify. The destination sends an ICMP "Echo Response" message back, allowing the round-trip delay to be measured.  It repeats this process 4 times by default. You will probably get different round-trip times for the 4 trials even though they are all done within a 4 second time-frame.  This shows how variable the delay performance of the Internet is.  The round-trip time is the time value in milliseconds (ms). · Use tracert to find the number of hops from your computer to the Web server of University of Florida. You can also determine what intermediate nodes lie on the path between the source and destination from this procedure. Please notice, tracert also pings every intermediate node to get a round-trip delay estimate to that node. · Use any Distance Finder (for example, Google Maps) to find the distance from your location to University of Florida in the unit of miles. · Finally, ping also calculates the minimum, maximum, and average time (in ms), as well as the loss rate based on the number of responses received to the Echo Requests (there should be one response for each request).  In order to get a better estimate, you should send at least 10 requests.  You can do this by typing "ping -n 10 ufl.edu". Lab Work to Turn in: STEP ONE: Select 2 universities from each time zone (Eastern Time zone, Mountain Time zone, Central Time zone and Pacific Time zone), and 2 universities from Asia (So total ten (10) universities). Ping each of the 10 universities’ website 10 times by using ping –n 10 “destination” to get the Average Time. Destination is the Web URL of the university. Use tracert to find the number of hops. Use any Distance Finder, such as google maps to calculate the distance between your place to the destination. STEP TWO: Open the given Excel file “ITM 332 Project One Data File” and use Save As to rename it to “YourLastName_First_Initial_P_1” as your Lab One file. STEP THREE: Record your findings for all 10 universities to your Lab One file. When one PING or TRACERT returns “Time Out …”, just try another one. There are many university/college which are able to be PING/TRACERT. STEP FOUR: Check if you got the data from 10 universities as required. Be sure the unit of distance in miles (1.6 km equals 1 mile). Then Sort the data ascending by the average time. STEP FIVE: Draw one Excel chart with two lines: one line the average time and the other line is the number of hops for all the 10 universities. The x-axis of the chart is the 10 universities. The chart must have two y-axis, one is the Average Time and the second is the number of hops. Use different mark for the two lines. Place the chart following the data on the left side STEP SIX: Draw another Excel chart with two lines: one line the average time and the other line is the number of distance for all the 10 universities. Set this chart same thing as the one in Step Four. Place the chart following the data on the right side STEP SEVEN: Insert a textbox bellow the charts to type your comment about this lab project, the data you collected, the chars and your finding as following: 1. Is the average round-trip time related to the number of hops? 2. Is the average round-trip time related to the distance? 3. Is the Loss Rate related to number of hops and/or the distance? 4. What did learn from the lab? What is the good of the lab? 5. Which part needs to be change/modify? 6. What else you think it is better to add to this lab? 7. Any other words you want to share with me about this lab. STEP EIGHT: Create a Footer for your lab Excel file. Enter the current semester/year on the left section, your FULL name in the middle, and the city, state, and zip code you completed the lab on the right section. STEP NINE: 1. Double check your project file name and make sure it as specified by Step two. 2. Submit you lab Excel file at “Submit Project Here” of Blackboard by/before the 11:59PM of the due date.
