PART-1
1. In his video “Who are you really?” Brian Little tries to explain the puzzle of personality. He illustrates how each one of us is similar or different from each other psychologically. He says why some of us describe ourselves as boring a
nd some of us feel fascinated about us. Trait psychology describes universally held aspects of differences between the people. These traits can be expressed through the acronym OCEAN. O stands for Open to experience, C for Consciousness, E for Extroversion, A for Agreeable individuals and N for Neurotic individuals. All these human beings have implications for our well being in how our life goes. Brian reveals the distinct features of all the personalities having above five free traits. He also explained the extrovert and the introvert personalities. He questions – “Are we all just a bunch of traits?” No. Then what makes us different and special? It is our doings or the personal projects that we have in our lives, that makes us special. You may be agreeable at some points in life but in order to achieve the goals of your personal projects and to break the barriers, you may turn aggressive in nature. He says that he is an introvert but he has a core project to profess. He is a professor. He adores his students, he adores his field.
2. Brian tells about the self concept, which is in-line with the module 50 of personality traits. The clinical scales like Aggressiveness, introversion, and excitability are also an integral part of the personality as reflected in the coursework. The trait classification by Brian is exactly the same as mentioned in the classification of “The Big Five” approach in module 51.
3. There are a lot of ways to measure a personality. Most of the psychologists measure it by examining the differences between the characteristics and how these characteristics combine to form a whole thinking and feeling person. There are two main theories mainly aimed to find a better way to measure a personality, namely: Trait and Social Cognitive Perspective. The researches of trait theory define the personality through conscious motivations and stable behaviors patterns. The Big Five Traits are studied to find out the behavior and the attitude. These traits can effectively predict in a better way our average behavior instead of how we would respond in a certain situation.
The theory of Social Cognitive Perspective defines the interaction between the traits (behavior) and the social context (environment). We learn a lot of behavior watching or imitating others. It is a social part and when we think about the impact of our social interactions on our behavior, it is a cognitive part. We create and feel the outcome of the situations around us. Each of the traits of personality has its own methods of measurement. Few of these methods are Dream Analysis, Free Association, Psychodynamics, Trait Personality Test and Thematic Apperception Test. There are few other prevalent measurement techniques like Personality Trait Inventories. However, the most widely used and the most reliable method of measurement is “Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory”. The most recent version of this test consists of 567 true or false questions. The questions are as simple as “ I love my father” or “I like mechanics”. This way it can determine the emotional disorders and hence the inner self.
PART V
1. Wilhelm Wundt established the first Psychological lab in1879 at Leipzig (Watts, 2009). The development of psychology as a science was influenced by the scientific methods used by Newton and Darwin. The principles used by these scientists were central to the scientific methods used in psychology. According to Newton’s Law, the future movements of any object can be predicted by the same set of core forces. Newton emphasized the active intervention of God in producing and maintaining the universe. There were two big riddles going on simultaneously. The riddle of the universe was being explored by Newton and Darwin while the riddle of ourselves was leading to the development of “Science of Spirit”. The aim of this emerging branch was to discover the reasons behind life, the perceived world, subjective world, and the science of the human mind. According to my perception, Wilhelm Wundt was an important contributor in its development as a science field due to the fact that he first time initiated the establishment of...
