Which communication skills does this position require that other media writing professions might not?

  • Why is it important for a media professional to pursue writing as a planned activity? Why can't a professional "write naturally?"

Part III(about 150words is good enough):If you were assigned to perform an audience analysis of the students in this class and could only ask 3 questions, what would they be? Explain why.

Part IV(about 150words is good enough):

  • Read textbook chapter 3 then answer :

  • As you've learned so far in this course, accuracy, brevity, and clarity are three chief goals of media writing. How do style and language conventions help writers to advance those goals?

Part V(about 50 words for each reply):write short replys to each of following posts:
Post 1.I'd have to say that the writing position or area that interests me most would have to be journalism.Mainly because I do enjoy reliable newspaper, magazine,or digital media information on real world issues or simply things that occur on a daily basis.Like, one of of my favorite pieces/programs of journalism was To Catch A Predator by Chris Hansen and Dateline NBC. Very compelling and interesting journalism work done to shed light on the sensitive subject and/or issue of pedophilia in America. And I also like journalism because relies heavily on issues within the world or specific cultures within specific areas,as well as relying heavily on details and facts (which is something I love and something being ignored moreand more as the years pass, allowing liars and ignorant individuals get away with spreading false or opinion basedinformation), in order to be done successfully and correctly.Journalism also has different key components that make it unique and its own special field, like reporting, observation, interviewing, writing, more so on writing skills, ethics, and credibility (Top 7 tips for Journalism by Jaime Fettrowin chapter 1 of the textbook). All of which making journalism stand out and making it different from other writing professions and what they require for success, like advertising, public relations, or a social media reporter. But, regardless of my preferences on writing professions, all should be based on the ability to develop strong, factual, and reliable information and writing skills by being fulfilled by ProfessionalMedia Writing and the Professional Writing Strategy, as well as the implication, analysis, and overall performance of ones Media Writer's Self-Perception (MWSP) and Grammer, Spelling, Punctuation (GSP) tests. Just so the writing is not only fluent, professional, and organized, but also so the individual writer can get a positive sense of their Writing Apprehension, Approaches, and Self-Efficacy.

Post 2(about 150words is good enough):The media writing profession I personally find to be most interesting would be advertising. I find writing for advertising to be fascinating because it involves a lot of creativity as well as visuals. Advertising is everywhere especially with the technology we have today. According to our textbook, advertising is a “persuasive” form of communication, in the sense that you are creating something in order to get your message across or sell a product. When it comes to writing for advertising, you can create things such as web pages, slogans, TV commercials, and newspaper ads. The key communication skills needed in this industry would be written communication, visual communication, and possibly public speaking skills if you are pitching your campaign to individuals. Advertising definitely takes a very creative person with a good eye for what is relatable, memorable, and for what tends to sell a product.

Post 3:It’s important for a media professional to pursue writing as a planned activity rather than just write naturally because there are three key things that need to be considered. You aren’t just writing in your personal journal for only yourself to see, you need to take into consideration the situation, the audience, and the message. When writing for a brand you want to not only take a consumer-centered approach, but also understand the “brand voice” because you are writing on behalf of the company you work for. If you write naturally, it tends to get confusing for the customer, and using a planned strategy is proven to be more organized and efficient. Writing professionals begin with assessing the situation of what they are writing about. The situation could be things such as news stories, emails, case studies, editorials, public relation pieces, proposals, and advertising copies. Then they can assess who their targeted audience is in order to be relatable, as well as to not offend anyone. Lastly, they will want to plan out what their message will be. You will want to leave the reader with a clear message that will be memorable and effective. It is also important to get out of your comfort zone and be willing to learn things and refocus your usual thinking patterns.

Post 4:Being a media professional, or media communicator through writing, needs to be a planned and professional process. It needs to be as objective as possible, and relying heavily on factual information instead of being subjective and based heavily on the writer's personal opinions, assumptions, or anything that's natural and not stuck to the news story in an organized and factual manner. Two ways that a media professional can accomplish this and stay organized with their reporting is to adopt the ProfessionalStrategy Triangle and use the Active Thinking Process. The triangle is a structure, or diagram, used to organize the following: the situation, audience, and message of the news story, as well as separating the process of the media professional "thinking" and "doing" with the professional strategy of the FAJA Points (fact, analysis, judgment, and action). And the Active Thinking Process is the format of directing the process of writing and reporting a story through a five step process: consider the situation and audience together, creatively envision the final story, actively learn, refocus your thinking, and finally, write. Both of these processes allow for the media professional to stay professional and organized, while relying on completely factual, reliable, and stable information on a story, instead of being based on biased opinions and/or anything that stems from writing naturally.

Post 5:

An audience analysis is essentially understanding who it is that you are presenting and or speaking to. In order to conduct an accurate audience analysis, it’s important to understand your demographic and what their interests and beliefs may be. If I were to conduct my own audience analysis of the students in this class, I would ask things such as:

  1. What is your major here at Farmingdale?

  2. Are you a Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Or Senior?

  3. Do you have previous experience in writing for electronic media?

With these three questions, I feel as if I can have a better understanding of who my audience is. I already know I am addressing fellow students, so by asking these three questions I can dig a little deeper and be able to relate more with others. Audience analysis is so important in media writing because whether you are in journalism, advertising, or public relations, you want to be able to reach your audience in a positive and efficient way. If you are naturally writing, you may not reach your targeted audience and get your message across effectively.

Post 6:

The perfect way to professionally breakdown the accuracy of a news story is to look at the audience of the story and their own demographic or placement in this story, and this can be achieved withan Audience Analysis. This is used to breakdown who the news story is going to be affecting and really where the story will strike the most and in the strongest fashion. If I was doing a new story on this class, and only had three questions, I'd ask the following:

1). Is Farmingdaleyour first college?

2). Do you need this class for your major?

3). What media profession would you like to be apart of after completingthis class?

These questions would be asked for the following reason: 1). It's important to know whether the students are familiar with how college courses go, as well as get an idea of how much experience they've had in college before (how many credits they have and what year they're in). 2). To find out if this class is a personal interest, career necessity, or just needed to fulfill their major and won't be taken as seriously as others. And 3)., If they want to pursue a career in this field, it's nice to know what it is they're chasing so it can be a detailed and informative class, as well as shedding light on their personal interests (journalism, advertising, etc.).

Post 7:Style and language conventions can support writers because they offer guidelines for consistency and accuracy, as well as showing exactly where the writer should start and or approach their work. Media professionals in all different types of work use industry specific guides like the “associated press stylebook” which provides them with a set of rules the writer must follow. This specific stylebook’s printed version is updated yearly, and even more so on their online version, in order to keep up with the modern and always changing language. Not only does this help to create a common language that makes it easier for the audience/reader, but it also helps the writer be able to reach deadlines much quicker and accurately. The audience is able to enjoy what they are reading without even know all of the techniques that go into media style writing. It’s a writer’s job to take news or events and put it into a language that is in brevity and clear to the reader. So, not only does style and language help the writer to work faster, but it’s also beneficial for the readers as well.

Post 8:Writing style and conventions are used by media professionals to create a distinct, precise, and appropriate form of writing for their stories and reports, while being grammatically and politically correct. Specifically, using the Media Writing Style. This is a form of writing where the reporter keeps and maintains a form of curacy, brevity, and clarity, as well as being active, vivid, and direct throughout all of their writing on each of their stories. Clarity can be achieved by using language in the most efficient manner possible to really make the story professional and clean, as well as increase the levels of simplicity and precision with the writing style for the audience to be able to read efficiently. Journalistic Objectivity (lack of bias, judgement, or prejudice in reporting, interviewing, and writing), and keeping Balance (not taking sides), are used in great amounts by media professionals to write in the best way possible. Lastly, media professionals also utilize the Associated Press Stylebook in their writing. For the purpose of expressing their Active (utilizing the subject-verb-object) and Passive (the object being acted upon) voices in their writing, as well as maintaining their Consciousness in writing (straight to the point with the story and facts at hand). The stylebook also helps with how to arrange sentences, keeping grammatical and spelling errors completely out of the writing entirely, and allows the writer to stay as organized as possible so that the audience/readers can get the most information with the least amount of writing (absence of run on sentences and unnecessary filler).

Sample of reply:I think that's awesome you enjoy reading things such as newspapers and magazines, I couldn't tell you the last time I had a physical newspaper in my hand because I read everything online! You brought up great points in your post that I forgot dealt with journalism. Interviewing and reporting seems like such a fun and interesting job!
