Introduction
The Finnish multinational Communications informational technology and consumer electronics company Nokia was founded in 1865. In 2017 the company employ
ed 102000 people across more than a hundred countries with its business in over 130 countries. However, in 2011 Nokia launched the first Smartphone of the LUMIA series which was vehemently a failed project. The LUMIA project was discontinued by 2017. This particular decade witnessed an exclusive development in the field of smartphones and disruptive technological challenges; the advancement of Android technology has combined to cause the failure of the Nokia LUMIA project.
In this assignment, a deliberate discussion on the reasons for the failure of the project of Nokia LUMIA will be made effectively. The discussion shall be guided by the project management theories and will emphasize the failure of Windows phone services by Nokia.
Strategic Decisions that Caused the Failure of Nokia LUMIA
Nokia emerged from Finland led to a revolution in the field of mobile phones. The company grew rapidly and was one of the valuable brands in the global market which enjoyed a global market share of 40% in the mobile phones segment. Although it has a swift journey, its decline was equally interesting as its sale was continuously culminating at the end of 2013. It is effective to blame the development of Apple and Samsung but statistics enumerates that the decline was inevitable even before the introduction of these companies in the mobile communication market. It is evident to note the fact that the rapid market change, growing complexity, and technological advancement have been contemplated with other factors that led to the gradual decline of Nokia and more particularly the Nokia LUMIA project.

(Source: Megerle, 2019)
The above figure denotes the market share of the different operating system that has been ruling over the market since 2012 to 2021. It is clear from the above depiction that by 2017 Windows phone was totally out of the smartphone market. The domination of the Android operating system has vehemently grown over time which is considered to be one of the greatest threats to the Windows phone. In recent times the Apple operating system and the Android Operating System has been a constant aspect in the telecommunication market.
At the end of 2012, Apple and Android were the new players in the market with new features that were effective enough to take over the market of Nokia. Numerous other strategic factors led to the declination and failure of the Nokia LUMIA project and the gradual decline of Nokia. By 2010 the limitations of Symbian phones were obvious which gave a competitive advantage to the Nokia LUMIA project initially but it was slow enough to respond to the new technological advancement and thereby it missed the shift towards the apps pioneered by Apple and other Android operating systems. This was a coherent reason for the gradual decline and it was out-marketed by the end of 2017.
Nokia failed to evolve according to the accelerating market changes and therefore lost the entire competition. It is important to mention at this particular perspective that Samsung chose Android at this particular time which benefited its maturation and gave it a platform such that it was able to surpass Nokia.
Different Phone Operating System
Windows Phone operating system is declared dead when Microsoft made an official announcement that there will be no further development and no miraculous Windows 10 mobile revivals that will attempt to compete with the duopoly of Apple's iOS and Google's Android. It is obvious that when the first Windows phone of the Nokia LUMIA series was launched in 2011 it had a much radically different phone operating system and was many ways ahead of its time.
The chromeless distilled interface of WP7 was much ahead of Apple and Samsung which provided live information, calendar surfacing next appointments, messaging app presenting snippets of text, a phone app with your last missed call, and so on. It is evident that some of the hub pages on Android like Blink feed or Google Now cards that provide relevant information and news have some of their inspiration from what Microsoft or Nokia did with their Windows phone of LUMIA series (Jiang, Yan & Wang, 2017). But the biggest mistake that the LUMIA series projected was in its failure to follow through with a bold vision and a novel design sensibility. The Windows phone of the LUMIA series was compromised and therefore it was significantly declined as it was unfamiliar and was alien to the mobile users.
Industrial Design Evolution
The effectiveness of the Windows phone ecosystem in the field of the smartphone has never been effectively recognized. The LUMIA series was equally not accepted by the users even when there was a revolution in the smartphone industry. When Nokia launched the LUMIA 800 Windows phone was pushed out in front in the industrial design stakes. They were a product of handsome and innovative designs of those times. Nokia invested heavily in making Windows phones a design leader in the smartphone industry. But the problem was that Nokia was pleasure arising itself by exploiting the designs of the N9 series. However, the most distinctive fact was that the LUMIA series launched Windows phones with a battery of differentiated designs.
It was unfortunate that...
