The first draft should be approximate 100 words. It should state the name of the failed engineering project, a one sentence description of the engineering project, a one sentence description of the failed aspect of the project, and a one sentence opinion assigning blame for the failure. The failed engineering project is Amtrak Train Off Bridgedisaster.

Term Research Project Each student will choose an engineering project that in some major aspect failed. Each student will: Submit a Five Page Report (plus appendix); Present an Online Presentation of their project. General Examples of engineering projects that went awry (in some cases disastrously) include: Tacoma Narrows Bridge; Titanic; Hindenberg; DC 10; DDT; Love Canal; Asbestos; Aswan Dam; Bhopal; Kansas City Hyatt; Harder Hall; Denver Airport Baggage System; Breast Implants; California Mud Slides; Chernobyl; 3 Mile Island; Challenger, Apollo 13; Thalidomide; Hancock Building; Pinto; GM Trucks; Samari; Waste Management; Amtrak Train Off Bridge; California Freeways; Hubble Space Telescope; Pentium Chip; Biosphere; Edsel; Internal Combustion Engine. It is interesting to note that many of the projects listed above are considered partial triumphs. For example, is it possible to argue that the safe return of the Apollo 13 astronauts was an engineering triumph. Thalidomide which caused serious human birth defects is now used successfully to treat cancer and leprosy. You may (if you like) select an engineering disaster from an episode of “Modern Marvels – Engineering Disasters”. At least two dozen of episodes and a hundred examples of engineering disasters are available on You Tube. No two students may use the same example of an engineering disaster. Two or more students using the same example will all receive zero credit. How you work that out is your problem to solve. Deadlines: No report, draft nor presentation will be accepted after the dates below. A report or presentation that does not adhere to the format stated below will receive the grade of zero. Failure to turn in draft will result in grade of zero. (Engineers must meet deadlines. Your professional work is of no value if it is not accepted because of a missed deadline or an incorrect format.) Five Page Report The format of the five page report is as follows: Page-1) Title page (Student Name; Engineering Project; and Assignment of Blame.); Page-2) Description of the engineering project; Page-3) Description of the failed aspect of project; Page-4) Opinion assigning blame for the failure on a specific engineer, politician, manager, social scientist, or someone else; Page-5) Bibliography; and Appendix) Contains appropriate graphics (more than zero, and less than six.) The report must be typed double spaced, 12 point Times font. FIRST DRAFT (See Due Date) A first draft of the Five Page Report is required. (Posted to the Discussion Board Term Research Project –Five Page Report Draft 1.) The first draft should be approximate 100 words. It should state the name of the failed engineering project, a one sentence description of the engineering project, a one sentence description of the failed aspect of the project, and a one sentence opinion assigning blame for the failure. SECOND DRAFT (See Due Date) A second draft of the Five Page Report is required. (Posted to the Discussion Board Term Research Project –Five Page Report Draft 2.) The second draft should be approximate 500 words. It should state the name of the failed engineering project, a one paragraph description of the engineering project, a one paragraph description of the failed aspect of the project, and a one paragraph opinion assigning blame for the failure. FINAL VERSION (See Due Date) A final version of Five Page Report is required. (Posted to the Discussion Board Term Research Project –Five Page Report Final.) Online Presentation FINAL VERSION (See Due Date) A final version of Online Presentation is required. (Posted to the Discussion Board Term Research Project –Online Presentation.) Students will visually present their finding to their fellow classmates the last week of class. Students are given some flexibility on how they choose to share their research with the class, PowerPoint, video, etc. Presentations should take 3 to 5 minutes for fellow classmates to read or to watch. If you prefer specific guidance: You presentation will use PowerPoint (or similar electronic format). Your presentation should be 7 slides. Slide-1) Title page (Student Name; Engineering Project; and Assignment of Blame.); Slide-2&3) Graphic description of the Engineering Project with appropriate figure(s) and caption(s); Slide-4&5) Graphic description of the failed aspect of project with appropriate figure(s) and caption(s); Slide -6) Graphic descripXon assigning blame for the failure on a specific engineer, politician, manager, social scientist, or someone else; Slide -7) Bibliography Requirements · Students must create an individual thread for their assignment under the Presentation Forum on the Discussion Board. · Each student must post one comment or question on each of the online presentations. · The student is responsible for monitoring his or her own thread. · The presenter must respond to any questions posed to him or her.
