An overview on conservation of critically endangered species Amur Leopard
“ Amur Leopard” is one of the most critically endangered animal which need to be protected to overcome the extinction by implementation of various programmes of conservation with the scientific name of Amur Leopard is “ Panthera pardus orientalis” (Lewis et al.). Amur Leopard is a rare subspecies of
leopards and is most commonly observed across the boundaries of the China, Russia and North Korea (Lewis et al.).
Amur Leopard
The defining characteristics of Amur Leopard are:
1. It can leap up to 19 feet horizontally and 10 feet vertically (ESCAP).
2. The weight can range from 70-105 pounds.
3. It can mostly survive in the temperate, Mountains, Broadleaf and mixed forest Habitats (Qi et al.).
4. The life-span is 10-15 years and maximum 20 years.
5. Amur leopard is very sting and has Nimble-foot.
6. The running speed of Amur Leopard is 37 miles/hour.
7. Other names of Amur Leopard- far East leopard, the Manchurian Leopard, the Korean leopard (Kelly, Stack and Harley).
8. Males are bigger in size in comparison to the females.
9. The tail of the Amur Leopard is distinct with 4 black rings at the tip of the tail (Hunter).
10. The winter coat is thick, long and plae which keeps it warm to survive in the harsh climate.
No subspecies is associated with the “Amur Leopard”. Amur Leopard is itself the rarest subspecies of the “Leopards”. In the early 1990’s the number of this leopards are nearly 100 but their numbers decreased to 70 by 2021. This Amur Leopard is adapted to the cold regions with the heavy snowfall. The history of this leopards says that these have been excavated from Japan and it has distributed across the borders of Eastern Siberia, China, Korea Peninsula and Russia (Qi et al.). It was also reported that in the tie period between 1910-1945 nearly 624 leopards were killed and In south Korea this Amur Leopard was extinct but in North Korea it is about to extinct (critically endangered) (Hyun et al.). The Amur Leopards are solitary and most active during the entire day irrespective of the seasons (Summer/ Winter) and there will stay near the river basins and where there is food abundant mostly near the deer farms (Hunter). The Amur Leopard conservation is very important as it associated with ecological, economical and the cultural factors. (Lim)The conservation of the Amur Leopards is not only beneficial for them but also beneficial for other species like Amur tigers and the deer’s to maintain the balanced ecosystem.
It is under the extension and is under the critically endangered species. The reasons for it extinction are
a. Poaching by both the Individuals as well as by the other prey species.
Most of the Amur leopards are poached for their beautiful fur which has high economic value of approximately $ 500 - $ 1000 an illegal trade by the people from the surrounding villages. Poaching problem is not only limited to Amur Leopards but it is also associated with the species of the animals (especially Deer, hare etc.) for both food and money (Wong and Wong). These Leopard were killed by the surrounding Russian villagers who don’t have any licences of gun and do illegal trade across the borders of the China to earn money (Wong and Wong). It was also reported that Tigers prey on the Amur Leopards due to limited prey availability as a part of the “Survival of the Fittest”.
b. Loss of Habitat.
The Loss of Habitat may have driven the Amur Leopards into the extinction. The human induced fires by the villagers (farmers) or other people for the other purposes- to improve the fertility of the land for the next season.
