Students are required to read the Science Section of the Tuesday New York Times every week.

On-going Writing Assignment:
Each month the student shall select an article of interest from that month’s Science Section and critically write about it. The writing is due before 11:59:59 PM on the last day of the month. The subject line of the email must be “Your Name” (First Last), “NYT Science Section Writing” and “MONTH” (as is appropriate). Also, the writing must be posted to the appropriate Blackboard Discussion Board. For example, your writing from September should be posted in the New York Times September Writing discussion board.

Your work must be less than 3000 characters (spaces included). [Brevity in reporting is one measure of the ability to perceive and understand.] The format of the writing is as follows:
State: The title of the article; The date of publication of the article; and The author of the article.

The article has depicted living state of bats in in rural parts of Africa where they have found very unusual place that they have chosen as their den. There are many researchers who have camped in the Tanzanian grasslands and they have experienced some of the most unusual incidents of their lives. Many of the researchers have found that their make shift open air 8-foot pit for dumping human waste have turned into the nest of African bats. From the experiences of the researchers and scientist new information have come out regarding the habitation of bats in Tanzanian grasslands. The scientists have found quite weird experiences when they wanted to use the toilet and a previously many of them used to be scared but later, they have observed a different experience altogether. For the observation a postdoctoral researcher of Bangor University of Wales has shared her experience by describing the soft leathery touches of the wings of the bats and how it has scared her in the first place.
In the country of Tanzania this kind of pit latrines are becoming cosy habitats for bath as it becomes quite warm with the heat and the concrete slab protect them from any outer harm. In the African journal of ecology Dr. Dorward has published a paper about the new habitats of the bats by researching about them and also, they have taken interviews of the researchers who have visited the place and experienced it.
