The purpose of the assessment is to
demonstrate your understanding of social work theories, select key theoretical principles and apply these to the case study below.
In completing both assessments you will learn about a broad range of social work theories and will begin to develop a framework for making sense of these. This will help to develop your professional identity as a social worker. You will address the following case study in both assessments:

Case study: The Mitchell family

Jennifer Mitchell, aged 43 years, lives with her two children, Thomas (13 years) and Amelia (six years). They live in a private rental property in a suburb of a major city.

Jennifer migrated to Australia from England in her twenties. She met Mark, Thomas and Amelia’s father, a few years later. Three years ago, Mark was made redundant, so accepted some casual work interstate. He was away from home for long periods, and when he returned, Jennifer and Mark argued a lot. They separated 12 months ago. Mark now lives interstate and visits Thomas and Amelia occasionally.

Jennifer is the primary caregiver for Thomas and Amelia and hadn’t been in paid employment since Thomas was born. After she separated from Mark, and Amelia started school, she returned to work as a childcare worker.

Six months ago, Jennifer was involved in a major motor vehicle accident while driving to work. She was in hospital for two months. Thomas and Amelia mostly stayed with Jennifer’s friends during this time. Jennifer has an acquired brain injury and is not able to work or drive. Since the separation and her accident, Jennifer has experienced periods of moderate depression.

Since Jennifer only returned to work for a short period, she doesn’t have significant savings or income protection. Jennifer is receiving some financial support via Centrelink. The hospital social worker helped Jennifer to register with the National Disability Insurance Scheme and she is on a waiting list to determine whether she is eligible to receive funding.

Their landlord has informed Jennifer that the lease will not be renewed, as they wish to sell the property. The lease ends in one month. There are limited private rental properties in the area and rent has increased significantly in the last few years. With help from her friends, Jennifer has applied for a few rental properties, but the applications have been unsuccessful since she’s not currently employed. Jennifer went to Housing SA but was told that there is a ten-year waiting period. Jennifer is hesitant to move away from her friends and her doctor. She doesn’t know where they will live when the lease ends.

Thomas has recently started high school. He has been busy caring for his Mum and Amelia. He does much of the cooking and cleaning. He is often tired at school and has trouble concentrating. His teachers are concerned that he’s falling behind.

Since the accident, going to school has become very distressing for Amelia. When Jennifer’s friend picks Amelia up in the mornings, she becomes very upset, and screams and cries for hours. Jennifer often allows her to stay home. At times Amelia is inseparable from her Mum. At other times, she plays alone in her room for hours. Amelia says that she misses her Dad.

Introduction
The current study helps in understanding the application of the social work theories and its appl
icability in the case study. The case study depicts the difficulties faced by the Mitchell family, where Jennifer is struggling to maintain a normal life for her children Thomas and Amelia while on the other hand, she is trying to overcome her recent accident and find a house once the lease gets expired.
The study will not only take into consideration how the current situation has affected all the members of the Mitchell family not only socially but also psychologically. Due to working as a social worker, it is important to understand both the aspect so that the best solution can be provided to the Mitchell family. This will allow both Thomas and Amelia to continue with their studies and lead a normal life, while Jennifer can once again earn wages to support her children.
Analysis of the Case Study
Argument Reflected by the Two Theories
The problem-solving theory that will be utilised in analysing the case is the task centred practice. In a task centred practice, the social worker concentrates on the actionable solution to the problems that are specifically applicable to the case. The method is direct and active and can be easily measured. As opined by Francom (2016), the advantage of adopting TCP is that it is highly adaptable and utilised at any situation by the social workers in order to address to the problems of the clients.
The TCP technique helps in the identification of the client's problem assists in outline the goals that need to be achieved. Lastly, TCP helps in creating goals that can help in executing the task of helping the clients and evaluate the situation critically. According to Tischler, Webster, Wittmann and Wade (2017), the social workers need to take in to account the various range of assessments, psychotherapies and counselling sessions so that the target problem of the client can be identified. The goals for the client are set based on their needs.
On that basis, the self-motivational goals are created so that the client can overcome the current situation and invest in making progress in their life. The TCP model consists of a series of sessions between the client and the social worker. During these sessions, the social worker keeps a track of the progress that is made by the client so that the remaining needs can be addressed. In this kind of therapy the mood swings, the pattern of thinking and the lack of motivation within the client are addressed so that they can once again return back to their normal life.
The psychological theory, which will be utilised for the analysis of the case, is the cognitive behaviour theory (CBT). CBT is a type of psychological treatment, which has been observed to be effective in case of problems like anxiety disorder, drug use, depression, marital problems, several mental stress and eating disorders. In some studies, it has revealed that CBT is most cases helps in improving the quality of life and functioning of the body. CBT treatment most often is utilised in case of psychological therapy. According to Sasaki et al. (2017), the social worker utilises a different type of strategies as a part of the CBT therapy of the client. It helps the client in understanding the problem that they are facing so that the treatment strategies can be developed.
In many cases, the CBT therapist concentrates on the current life of the client, which has resulted in the challenges they are currently facing (NHS, 2019). This process will enable the client to understand the reason from where their anxiety and depression are coming. Then with this analysis, CBT can help ion the development of effective methods, by which the client can cope up with their lives and improves their quality of living (Very Well Mind, 2020). It has been observed that this type of psychotherapeutic treatment allows the patients in understanding their feelings and thoughts that influence their behaviours.
The wide variety of mental health conditions that can be treated by CBT includes anxiety, phobias, addictions, disorders and depressions. CBT treatment is considered to be a short-term therapeutic process that helped in focusing on helping the clients in dealing with specific problems includes identifying the destructive and disturbing patterns of the clients' condition.
Application of the Theories on Case Study
Jennifer had been in the medical facility for two months after she met with the motor accident. This is the time she needs task-centred care, as she does not have anyone to take care of her, she is under extreme stress, as she needs to find a place to stay for her children. Moreover, she is not able to drive her children to school nor look after them before her accident and has to depend on her friends to look after her family.
In this case as a social worker, first, it is important to discuss with the client the visit times so that the task-centred care can be provided to her at an agreed time. As observed by Ronald (2017), initially, the social worker will assess Jennifer based on the unique challenges she is currently facing. Her inability to earn enough to continue her children’s education, her physical disability followed up with the unintended consequences of the situation will be reviewed and addressed with Jennifer.
From a psychological point of view, Jennifer was going through a lot of anxiety and stress. In addition, after Mark had left her with her children, she did not have...
