Managing Organisations (MNG10247) Assignment 2 Guidelines Title: Assignment 2 – Manager Interview Marks: 20 (which is 20% of the unit grade) Due: Prior to 9:00 am Monday, 06th December 2018 Task: Students are to interview1 a current Manager to identify and analyse how he/she performs, as part of their Managerial responsibilities, one of the fundamental Functions of Management (i.e. Planning, Leading, Organising or Controlling). This information is to be presented as a report (max 1000 words) with a minimum of three distinct references from academic ‘peer-reviewed’ journals to support your analysis. 1 It is anticipated that the interview last no longer than 15mins. 2 That is, broad questions that you can follow up with more specific questions. Purpose: The assignment is designed to help students recognise the way in which a key management concept studied in the unit is applied in practice. Submitting: The assignment is to be submitted via Turn-it-in. Look for the submission link in the ‘Task 2’ folder. The link is active from Week 3 and students can submit any time up to the due date. Feedback: Students who submit their report by the due date will receive feedback within 2 weeks. This feedback will be in the form of a marking rubric and a copy of the report with electronic comments made by the marker. Report Structure: The evaluative report structure is often used when you must research theory and apply it to a practical or real situation. For this assessment, it contains the following sections and headings. Title Executive Summary Table of Contents Introduction Body Conclusions Recommendations List of References Appendices Report Research: The aim of the report is to explain and evaluate how theory is applied in practice. Specifically, how a manager applies in practice one of the four managerial functions (Planning, Leading, Organising or Controlling). As such, develop three to five open-ended2 questions that specifically address the manager’s understanding and application of the selected managerial function and analyse the information you get for your evaluation. Report Format: The single document submitted for this assignment is to contain the following components and formatting features: · • Title Page o This is developed by the individual student. It is to identify the unit name & code, assignment title, student name & ID, and the word count. Note: Executive Summary, Table of Contents and Reference List do not contribute to the word count. · o The title should provide insight into the focus of the report. · o The Title Page is not numbered. · · • Executive Summary o A brief overview of the aim and findings of the report. · o On a page by itself and should be numbered in roman numerals but acceptable to have no page numbering at all. · · • Table of Contents o Professional presentation using MSWord Insert Table of Contents function. · o On a page by itself and should be numbered in roman numerals but acceptable to have no page numbering at all. · · • Introduction o “Page 1” begins here at the bottom right hand corner. Use the ‘page number’ formatting function for this purpose. The remaining pages should then be numbered ‘Page 2’, ‘Page 3’, etc. · o Provide topic orientation (what is the topic and why is it important), state the aim of the report, define any key terms and outline what will be presented in the report. · · • Body (use the following three separate sections and any applicable headings and subheadings) o Theory (explain the managerial function you are investigating) · o Observation (describe how the managerial function is applied in practice) ▪ · ▪Describe the key tasks or activities that the Manager spends their time on and explain how they relate to the selected managerial function. · ▪Describe the key challenges of the Manager’s role and explain how they relate to the selected managerial function. · · o Evaluation/interpretation (compare managerial function in practice with theory, evaluate whether the managerial function is effectively applied) · · • Conclusion o Restate aim of report and summarise findings/evaluation · · • Recommendations o List three recommendations on how the managerial function may be more effectively implemented · · • Reference List o Correctly apply Harvard referencing style. · · • Appendices o Interviewee details (use the template provided in the asmt 2 file) · o Transcript of the interview. The entire interview does not need to be transcribed but just the key questions asked and the Manager’s responses. · · • Formatting o Perspective – Use 3rd-person perspective when writing. · o Font style – Times New Roman, 12pt, justified, 1½ line spacing. Note: if you do not know what the term ‘justified’ means, ask your tutor. · o Margins – top and bottom to be 2.54cm. Left and right to be 2.54cm. No page borders. · o Spelling – specify Australian English language/grammar when running spell-check. · o Writing – Grammar and expression must conform to the standards of a professional report · MNG10247: Assignment 2 Marking Criteria Analysis & use of Academic Sources (35%) 1) Unsatisfactory. The report reflects a poor understanding of the Management Function and/or the Manager’s context. Information attributed to academic sources makes no meaningful contribution to the discussion. 2) Pass. A basic understanding of the Management Function and Manager’s context has been demonstrated. There is at least one area of uncertainty in the report that needs to be re-examined. 3) Credit. A good understanding of the Management Function and Manager’s context has been demonstrated. Further improvement can be made with more probing interview questions or deeper consideration of the answers provided. 4) Distinction. A strong understanding of the Management Function and Manager’s context has been demonstrated. Improve the quality of work by supporting your analysis with further/clearer logic and/or reference to valid academic sources. 5) HD. The report reveals strong insight into the Management Function and its practical application. The analysis is effectively supported with complete/clear logic and reference to valid academic sources. Quality of writing (35%) 1) Unsatisfactory. The writing is ineffective due to numerous spelling and/or grammatical errors. 2) Pass. Proof-read the final document to identify and correct minor errors in spelling and grammar. Plan for and undertake additional drafts as this will help to improve the quality of your written work. 3) Credit. A good standard of writing is provided (no spelling errors), however there is room for improvement in terms of higher-order writing skills (e.g. vocabulary and sentence structure). 4) Distinction. Higher-order writing skills are evident in parts. Greater consistency will improve the overall quality of your work. 5) HD. The quality of writing in the report is exceptional. Well done. Referencing and Formatting (30%) 1) Unsatisfactory. The assignment document is unprofessionally presented and/or the required number of references are not provided. 2) Pass. The assignment document is generally well presented but several (at least 2) formatting features have not been adopted and there is a notable error (or errors) with the referencing style. 3) Credit. The assignment document is well presented but several (at least 2) formatting features have not been adopted or there is a notable error with the referencing style. 4) Distinction. 1. Executive summary
The person who takes the complete responsibility of initiating project, designing the solution, monitoring the ongoing processes, controlling different activities and defines the successful closure of the developing project is called manager. The manager has different roles and responsibilities required for successful closer of project [Anantatmula, 2010]. For completing this assignment, an interview with my well known manager working in IT farm is conducted. The interview was quite learning activity and different roles and responsibilities are easily identified through it. The friendly nature of manager makes it easy for me to conduct this interview on easy bases. The roles of managers can changes in different industries but the overall flow of responsibilities is quite similar in all industries. It is a quite challenging task for me as student to interview working manager in IT farm.
2. Introduction
The interviews are most common method used to find the facts related to any business, process or requirement gathering to any project. Conducting interview with manager is not an easy task; I have to take a prior appointment because of his busy schedule [Blomquist & Müller, 2006]. The manager defines the architecture of project, monitors the development of project and makes selection of used information technology and many more tasks to perform. The managerial skills developed by managers are quite ethical. Asking penetrating questions related to his role and functions are quite easy because of his friendly nature.
