The student will use The Developing Person Through Childhood, 6th edition, by Kathleen Stassen Berger as the text and will be required to maintain a definition log of 10 to 15 key terms from each chapter, using his/her own words and providing a brief example for each. In addition, the student is required to choose three study questions to answer from the end of each chapter (these responses should be approximately one to two short paragraphs long). Towards the end of the term, he student will complete a 6-10 page paper focusing on a relevant topic of interest within the context of the nature vs. nurture debate and make an oral presentation. The student will use the text and 6-10 additional academic journal articles to develop and support their ideas for the paper. These sources will be properly cited in footnotes and bibliography.


By mid-semester of the course, the student should have completed at least half of the reading and written chapter work. Students are responsible for maintaining their own extra copies of all of their work. Students are also expected to write their assignments using their own words (paraphrasing is acceptable but not copying from the text or any other outside sources) and to use APA style citations in their papers.

The debate of nature and nurture is one of the oldest phenomena of development science that has evolved to a theoretical perspective in child development. It is addressed as a complementary dialogue that States the viability of understanding the complex interaction between the biological factors and the environmental factors that influences child development. It is obvious that the mind of a child and development pathways do not follow similar patterns and there are effective transformations which are unpredictable neurobiological processes that are triggered by the external environment and are interpreted differently for a different child.

Genetic influences are one of the effective impacts on human characteristics in terms of eye and hair color and incidence of genetic diseases. Yet human traits like life expectancy, height, weight have an environmental and genetic have an impact on both environmental and genetic components. It is also obvious that the child's development is influenced by the external factors that the encounters and it significantly impacts his cognitive processes. The genetic influences in the child are in terms of the inheritable nature (Wertz et al., 2019). Certain traits are acquired and this is an impact of the external factors and behavioral factors that impact the development of effects of the child. According to the studies of the social learning theory it addresses that the development of the child depends upon the parenting styles and the learned experience is which determines the aspects of whether the child behaves aggressively or politely in specific situations.
However, the research on the genetic component issues the aspect of the biological foundation of cognitive processes that contributes to the learning processes which are inheritable. So, the aspect of nature and nurture they have and be impacts the physical and the cognitive development of the child and strand the aspect of Human Development. There are other factors such as social-environmental cultural and social-economic factors that also affect human development (Rusterholz et al., 2018). It must be specified that every child is born with genetic characteristics and is nurtured in different environments which consequently results in developing different traits. A child reacts to various environmental factors that are indirectly influenced by genetic factors. Therefore, it is evident that nature and nurture are co-dependent on each other in terms of child development.

Researchers have illustrated the significant role of genetics in the development of the child's physical and personality characteristics.
