The successful completion of a research is based on theeffective execution of different steps involved in the process. The main steps are; defining issues and problems, designing the project, collecting data, and interpreting and reporting the findings(Mertens& Flowers, 2010).
Defining Issues and Problems
The first step will involve locating and identifying issues and problems that need to be addressed. This is the initial step. It will aim to uncover the nature and boundaries of an issue of interest(Murray State University, 2020).It also serves to develop a purpose for the study, relevant background information, information that will be required, and how such information will influence decision making.
Designing Research Project
This step involves the creation of an approach that would be effective in solving the issue or problem identified. Such an approach forms the framework for conducting the research project. It details the processes and procedures necessary for obtaining the necessary information to answer the research questions. Some of the possible designs include; qualitative design, secondary data analysis, questionnaire design, measurement and scaling procedures, and systematic literature reviews(Murray State University, 2020). The role of the research design is to support the desired deliverables of a research project. Some designs are better suited than others for specific studies.
Collecting Data
The information identified as important to respond to the research questions have to be gathered. This information has to be relevant, and usable in solving the issue or problem identified in the first step. The method used to collect data is determined by the research design selected. Some of the sources that can be used to access data include; secondary sources, questionnaires, interviews, and surveys(Murray State University, 2020).
Interpreting Data and Reporting Findings
When relevant information is gathered, it has to be interpreted to relate it to the research questions. The goal of interpreting the data is to use it to reach a conclusion that solves the identified problem.Reporting the research findings involves sharing the knowledge that has been obtained throughout the previous research steps. The reports should be directed towards those requiring the information to make decisions(Murray State University, 2020). The research report is the final step in the research process. The findings should be reported in a comprehensive manner to allow others to understand all the relevant information.
