Running Head: LITERATURE REVIEW1 LITERATURE REVIEW12 IMPROVING QUALITY OF SLEEP BY USING MINDFULNESS IN ADOLESCENTS Introduction In the present days, getting a good quality of the sleep is considered as the gift provided by the nature. In this fast and busy life, number of hours implemented by people in sleep is very getting lesser with passing time. People especially teenagers and office going population are implementing the large amount of time in their work or spend on their leisure at the cost of sleeping. Over the period, most of them suffered from poor quality of sleep and the purpose of sleep just ended. Earlier, the meaning of sleep was getting refresh to start the new day. Now, sleep is mere a routine, which people complete every night. This poor quality of sleep results in lowering the quality of life. Apart from this, it is responsible for the development of many kinds of disorders such as depression and anxiety. There are many methods, which have been developed over the period to improve the quality of sleep. Mindfulness is one of the therapies, which is used to improve the quality. This can be applied in everyday life. This therapy can be applied as an intervention and its impact can be studied. Following assignment applied mindfulness as an intervention on adolescent suffering from the poor quality of sleep. Target Problem The target problem is quality of sleep. During the early stages of poor quality of sleep, people fail to pay any serious attention until it takes the serious turn. As mentioned by Quintero et al. (2019), poor quality of sleep is responsible for causing sleep insomnia. Most of the people are suffering from the poor quality of sleep. It has been seen that early signs of poor sleep are often neglected by the people. Some of the people fail to get proper diagnosis of their issue until their insomnia is worsened. As stated by Albertsdottir, Sigurdardottir and Thorleifsdottir (2019), early signs of poor quality of sleep are ignored very badly. These signs include taking around thirty minutes in falling asleep after getting into bed. Getting awake more than once every night and take more than twenty minutes in getting back to sleep when awake in the middle. Apart from this, the amount of time spend in sleeping is less than eighty percent of the mentioned hours. As suggested by de Lima and Silva (2018), there are many causes for the poor quality of the sleep. There are wide range of medical illness, which results into sleep disturbance and poor quality of sleep. The chronic illness such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, heartburn, mental health problems, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory problem and thyroid disease are responsible for lowering of quality of sleep. On the contrary, high level of stress and depression also act as main factor for causing poor quality of sleep. As noted by Wang et al. (2016), it has been seen that poor quality of sleep can have impact on the daily routine of the people. People after the sleep, fail to get refresh, they experience excessive daytime sleepiness. Apart from this, there is lack of energy in people and have difficulty in concentrating. There is a mood and behaviour disturbance among people. Individuals often show aggression, irritability and impulsive behaviour. There is decrease in the concentration and increase in the depression among people. On the contrary, poor quality of sleep is responsible for developing of troubles in personal and professional relationships. Overall, it reduces the quality of life. As stated by Kolb and Martin (2017), there are internal as well as external factors responsible for the lowering of the quality of sleep. The amount of sleep decreases with the age and other variations that took place over the period. Other factors, such as eating and drinking, medication and environment also influence the sleeping pattern of the person. These days frequent change in the sleep cycle is responsible for reducing the quality of sleep among people. The long working hours and rotational shifts directly affect the sleep of the people. People working night shifts are responsible for the change in the biological cycle of the body. Apart from this, excessive sleepiness and change in the timing of the sleep result into causing poor quality of sleep. As mentioned by Blafoss et al. (2019), pain and discomfort can limit the depth of sleep and result in a brief sleep between the periods of awakenings. Since depression and anxiety among the people of all ages is very common. People suffered from these disorders have constant difficulty in sleeping. There are certain medications, which prevent people from taking good quality of sleep. It must be noted that at an early age poor quality of sleep does not seem to be major problem but over the period, it can risk the life of the people and forced the people to consume high dosage of the sleeping pills for better sleep. Target Population The target population selected for the study is adolescents. As suggested by Campsen and Buboltz (2017), it has been seen that adolescent needs to have sleep between eight and ten hours every night. Their sleep requirement is higher than any other adult is. On the contrary, in the present times, adolescents get only 6-7 hours of sleep every night, which is getting lesser with every generation. This trend is very risky as poor quality of sleep among the adolescents become common problem. This constant trend of poor quality of sleep makes the adolescent vulnerable towards chronic sleep deprivation. As an outcome, it poorly affects the life of teenagers. They can have poor academic performance at school, low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. Their mental health gets disturb. As mentioned by Liu et al. (2017), the main cause of poor quality of sleep among adolescent include change in the lifestyle. There is high rate of addiction towards the mobile phones and social media, which prevent the teenagers to sleep on time despite of laying bed at right time. On an average, adolescent use more than 2 to 3 hours on mobile phones to play games or spend time on the social media. This reduces their sleeping time, as they have to wake up early to attend their schools and colleges. The hectic schedule of school and after-school activities such as tuition, homework and extra-curricular activities prevent these children to get early sleep. On the contrary, all the adolescent engaged their time in entertainment such as watching television or computer gaming, which reduces their time of sleep further. As noted by Xie, Dong and Wang (2018), it has been seen that the light exposure adolescent get from the mobile and television screen results in

Introduction
Sleep is an essential yet, one of the most neglected aspect of adolescent’s life. It would be essential to consider that sleep necessity could be compar
able to food and water in the life of an individual. During sleep, body of an individual might be observed in resting phase; however, metabolic processes and brain functioning are very high during sleep. Sleep quantity and quality, both affects the quality of life, where quality matters the most. However, considering the modern lifestyles of individual, sleep quality is one of the most affected and most neglected part of their lifestyle. It would be essential to consider that adolescence is the transitional and developmental phase in the life of an individual; therefore, maximum growth and brain development occurs during this phase.
Therefore, this intervention will directly target the issues associated with quality of sleep. This assignment will discuss and outline the intervention along with session outlines. Further, as presented in the prior assessment, current intervention will discuss planning, preparation and execution of the proposed intervention would also be presented. Along with this, efforts will be made to educate the adolescents regarding sleep and effects of external and internal factors on sleeping patterns. Further, this intervention would also have an evaluation plan in order to measure the effectiveness of intervention.
PICO Question for the Intervention
The research question for this intervention would allow adherence to specific aspects and will prevent any diversions. Therefore, research question would be,
‘Considering the modern lifestyle and stressful life, how adolescence could be educated in order to maintain their sleep quality and live a healthy life?’
Importance of Quality Sleeps During Adolescence
As presented above also, just like food and water, quality sleep is another essential and inevitable aspect of human life. This is majorly because human body performs numerous vital functions during sleep such as, thermoregulation, detoxification of brain, protein synthesis, hormonal release and much more (Telzer, Goldenberg, Fuligni, Lieberman & Gálvan, 2015). Further, sleep helps to fuel the brain and body, which is an essential aspect for adolescents because they are during transition phase of their life. During this stage of life, adolescents require at least 8 hours of non-interruptive sleep. This is majorly because during 10-19 years of age, which is also called adolescence, body develops hormonal control and metabolic processes are at highest (Buxton, Chang, Spilsbury, Bos, Emsellem & Knutson, 2015).
Males as well as females undergo puberty and major changes in their body occur, which are facilitated by hormonal control. It would be essential to consider that these hormonal changes itself leads to irritation and change in behavior patterns, this combined with lack of quality sleep could certainly lead to negative impacts on the growth and development of body. Mukherjee et al., (2015) insomnia, restless leg syndrome, depression and anxiety development along with development of improper cognitive functions are common disorders, which teens might develop. Owens and Adolescent Sleep Working Group (2014) presented and argued that, human body follows a biological clock controlled by day and night patterns, which further is facilitated by hormonal control; therefore, quality of life is highly affected by disturbance or non-adherence to this biological clock. Sleep could be divided into light and deep sleep, where duration of deep sleep determines the time of quality sleep. Duration of deep sleep further facilitates the metabolic processes and hormonal control among adolescents (Telzer, Goldenberg, Fuligni, Lieberman & Gálvan, 2015).
Issues Affecting the Quality of Sleep
There are a number of factors, which not only affects but also intervene and affects normal sleeping patterns of adolescents. One of the major factor is hormonal time shift, which occurs during puberty (Albertsdottir, Sigurdardottir & Thorleifsdottir, 2019). As presented above also, males as well as females undergo puberty during adolescence and release of hormones inculcates a natural shift among teenager’s body. Thus, this might forward their biological clock by 1 or 2 hours, and the quality sleep time increases from 6-8 hours to 8-10 hours. Modern lifestyle habits such as, increased usage of screen-based devices such as mobile phones, computers, television and tablets are one of the major factors resulting into reduction of sleep quantity and quality (Campsen, & Buboltz, 2017). Body’s biological clock is greatly affected by sunlight and at night, sleeping hormones are produced; however, due to continuous access of these devices, body fails to recognize the time and sleeping hormone production is affected.
Further, due to more emphasis upon leisure activities such as internet, television, gaming consoles, computers and much more have reduced the indulgence of adolescents into sports and other physical activities. As presented by Kredlow, Capozzoli, Hearon, Calkins and Otto (2015), individuals tend to get good quality sleep and fall asleep faster when they are indulged into physical activity or sports such as, weight lifting, running, basketball, football and much more. Likewise, increased stress levels could also be considered as a major factor affecting quality sleep. Due to hectic lifestyle such as school, after school schedule, sports, part time jobs, social commitments and much more, cortisol levels or level of stress hormones increases. As a result, increased cortisol levels hinders with the release of sleep hormones; thus, affecting the sleep quality and duration of individuals. Bassett, Lupis, Gianferante, Rohleder and Wolf, (2015).
Unhealthy food habits could also be considered as one of the major factor affecting quality sleep. Foods and drinks such as, sodas, cola drinks, tea, coffee and are high in a sleep inhibiting compound called ‘caffeine’. It would be essential to consider that most of the beverages contain range of caffeine dosage. Caffeine inhibits sleep because it does not allow the brain to receive fatigue signals from the body. Consumption of caffeinated beverages 5-6 hours before sleep directly affects the sleeping pattern and does not allow individual to fall sleep (Carskadon & Tarokh, 2014). Caffeine stays within the body for around 5-6 hours; however, adolescents consume cola and other sodas very frequently, which again affect their sleep quality. Moreover, another shocking aspect to consider is that insufficient sleep causes the mind to become more active and this is majorly because sleep deprivation is considered as a stress by the body. Therefore, cortisol are released, increased cortisol levels cause over-arousing of brain, which affects the ability to fall asleep. This phenomenon is also known as vicious circle and is highly affected by social attitudes for example, in western cultures, staying awake is more valued than sleep (Albertsdottir, Sigurdardottir & Thorleifsdottir, 2019).
Development of the Group Intervention
It would be essential to consider that the issues associated with lack of quality sleep are very common among adolescents. Sleeping patterns and sleeping habits been impacted the most due to modernization. Therefore, a group intervention is one of the most effective and efficient method to address this issue. This intervention will specifically target the issues associated with poor lifestyle among adolescents. Mindfulness and meditation approach is one of the most effective way, which could be used to correct or bring back the good quality sleep.
This group intervention considers bringing change in the attitudes and behaviors of participants, which would majorly involve adolescents. Therefore, one of the major purposes of this group intervention would be educational and developmental. In other words, this intervention tends to not only educate adolescents regarding importance of sleep but also emphasis would be upon development of certain behaviors and attitudes....
