The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in 2011 establishing happiness as an indicator of development. Currently, the variables considered in the rankings include gross domestic product per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, and Finland have held the top spot in the last four reports. The United States ranks at 19.
