The Value of Pets

The idea that a dog is "man's best friend" is an old and familiar adage. Yet the saying is backed up by truth. Substantial research suggests that pets have therapeutic benefits that cannot be understated. Pets promote social interaction, reduce stress, encourage exercise, and most important for many, provide unconditional love and affection. Moreover, pets teach responsibility because they require work and attention just like all members of a family. However, there is some evidence that pets can also come to replace human connection - that people turn to their animals as sources of loyalty and inadvertently replace their real-life social interaction with a reliance on an animal. In addition, pets for a compromised owner, perhaps someone facing serious life issues or aging, can come to represent real sources of stress. In light of these considerations, it is important to evaluate the popular narrative of the value of a pet, in order to reach a fuller conclusion about their impact on our lives.

Read and carefully consider each of these perspectives. Each suggests a particular way of thinking about the value of pets.

Perspective One

After a long day of work or a tough situation in one's life, there is immeasurable value in having a pet on which one can rely. Because many pets require care, they encourage a more active and routine lifestyle for their owners. Their consistent needs can, in turn, provide a stability that is often difficult to find.

Perspective Two
Pets cost money, and because the evidence for their value is often anecdotal rather than statistical, they only add a financial burden to their owner. With a full schedule, an animal that requires attention, maintenance, and money is not always a positive option.

Perspective Three

Pets can sometimes come to replace real human relationships. Because they are capable of providing unconditional love, some research suggests that pet owners expect these qualities to be true in the rest of their lives.
