There are a number of reasons having a diverse workforce is important. Studies have shown a key benefit of diversity is improved organizational performance. One study compared decision-making between teams with ethnic diversity and teams without ethnic diversity; results revealed the diverse team’s decisions were 58% better than non-diverse teams (Levine et al. 2014). Another study looked at gender and discovered shifting from an all-male or all-female office to one split evenly increased revenue by 41% (Ellison & Mullin, 2014). Additionally, research has shown job seekers are more attracted to organizations that invest in diversity (Madera & Dawson, 2016).
In the video “The Importance of Diversity in the Workplace” Debbie Story, Sr. VP for Talent Development and Chief Diversity Officer at AT&T, and Steve Bucherati, Chief Diversity Officer at The Coca-Cola Company, discuss why their organizations are committed to diversity and inclusion and the reasons it is so important to their company’s success.
Once a company has committed to diversity and inclusion, it must become part of its workforce planning process. Watch the video “5 Steps to Successful Workforce Planning” for more details on planning a workforce.
