There are several key environmental forces that have shaped the health information system (HIS) landscape and the ongoing evolution and adoption of systems and technologies. Various factors have shaped the current and future use of health information technology (HIT). Understanding this background allows one to understand the roles of the private sector as well as government efforts to advance HIT.
