fessor Hofstede has given six dimensions of the national culture based on his research. According to him, culture can be defined as the collective programming of the mind which distinguish one group members from another. These dimensions are power distance index, individualism versus collectivism, masculinity versus femininity, uncertainty avoidance index, long term orientation versus short term normative orientation and indulgence versus restrain. These cultural dimension shows the preferences of one state over other. The power distance index expresses the level to which member of the society with low power accept and expect that the distribution of power is done unequally. This dimension focus on the way society deals with inequality among people. People with high power distance accept their position in society, whereas people with low power distance demand for justification for unequal distribution of power (Hofstede insight, 2019).
In individualism versus collectivism, the individualism is considered high side and defined as preferences of loose social framework in which individuals only think about themselves and their immediate families. On the contrary, in collectivism, preference of close social framework in which individual expect their relatives to take care of them in exchange loyalty. In masculinity versus femininity, masculinity represent societal preference for achievement, assertiveness, heroism and material rewards for success. Society is considered competitive. On the contrary, femininity represent the societal preferences for modesty, cooperation, caring for the weak and quality of life. It is consensus oriented (Hofstede insight, 2019).
In uncertainty avoidance index, the degree at which member of society feels uncomfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty can be defined. It focusses on the way society handle the fact that future cannot be known. Countries with high uncertainty avoidance index are intolerant to unorthodox behavior. In long term orientation versus short term normative orientation, every society need to manage its relation with past when dealing with challenges of present and future. society which score high in this dimension prefer pragmatic approach.
