Introduction
Healthcare industry completely dependent on the nurses to provide the high-quality care to the patients so that their health can be improved. Nurses are considered as second most important pillar in the healthcare settings whether they are hospitals or clinics. As stated by Huber (2017), leadership can be defined as the process in which a person acts as a leader and help the group of people in an organization or at times of crisis. Nurses act as leader in case of emergency. They behave like a leader by developing the leadership styles, behavior, and qualities.
It must be noted that some people have leadership skills during their young age whereas others learned to develop the leadership qualities. It has been seen that when nurses failed to behave like leader at their work, they often failed to fulfill their job as nurse. This is because nursing job required leadership qualities and skills so that nurses can patiently deal with all the critical situations. In nursing, development of emergency is very common as nurses need to deal with critical patients and their families every day using their leadership style.
Selection of leadership styles and its rationale
The two leadership styles, which are identified as suitable, are transactional leadership style and transformational leadership style.
Transactional leadership style
Transactional leadership style is considered style which is used by the leaders. This style is the oldest style and have many literatures which provide the success stories of this style. As mentioned by Baškarada, Watson, and Cromarty (2017), transactional leadership style can be defined as the leadership style which gives the leaders the main position in making all the necessary decisions. This style suggested that leaders need to be followed and they played the main role in motivating the people in their team so that they can perform well in their work.
This leadership style includes punishment and reward system to pose challenges and motivation for the people to perform well. Leader works critically to defines the rules for reward and punishment so that the team get motivated to work well and performed better than their prior performance. This leadership style is based on three main principles which are controlling, organizing and short-term planning. As noted by Jensen et al. (2019), it has been seen that in controlling, leaders provide the necessary guidance to the team about the rules that need to be followed for the successful completion of the work.
This includes the actions which are acceptable and action which are not acceptable for pursuing the work. On the contrary, in organizing, it includes setting of the plans with the team member. In this leader organizes the constant meetings and conduct discussions related to the objectives as well as goals which each team member needs to be fulfilled.
As noted by Afsar, Badir, Saeed, and Hafeez (2017), in context of short-term planning, it has been seen that leader focused on the actions which are performed to bring the change or fulfil the objectives, it has been seen that transactional leadership style focused on motivating the team members to fulfilled their self-interest as well as objective of the organization. This kind of leadership style helps in managing the needs of leaders and their followers. This leadership style is crucial in improving the performance of the team members and leader in fulfilling their objectives.
Transformational leadership style
Transformational leadership style is achieving popularity these days. This style is selected because it focuses on motivating the team members, as an outcome, team members able to perform exceptionally well. As suggested by Nguyen, Mia, Winata, and Chong (2017), transformational leadership style can be defined as the leadership style which focuses on bringing the positive change.
In this style, leader work to bring the positive change in the life of their team members with the help of transformational style. When leader adopts this style, they become successful in improving the performance, morale, and motivation of the team members by adopting various kinds of techniques suitable for the situation. Apart from this, transformational leadership approach works in reformatting the perception and values of the leader.
As mentioned by Choi, Kim, and Kang (2017), this approach works successfully in supporting the team members so that their expectation and...
