They remain on the frontline of the workforce in the healthcare industry providing high-quality patient care. Including administration of medication, educating patients, maintaining medical equipment they prepare the medical setting concerning preventive care. Hence, the roles, and responsibilities of them are impactful. The transition period of a UNS (Under graduate Nursing Student) to RN (Registered Nurse) is really challenging. Although they have required competencies, in the initial level they get stressed easily. This study explores the crucial roles and responsibilities of RN, and the strategies to cope up with the transition relied on a case study. Including the case study analysis, it provides several recommendations to undertake their responsibilities utilizing the existing resources. Discussion Question 1: Justification of the graduate RN roles and responsibilities According to the Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia (NMBA) the standards of the registered nurses are to build a strong knot in the professional field giving evidence-based and person-centred care. The Australian community has its linguistic diversity, and rich cultural mixture, and the standards of the registered nurses are established in that context. These important standards are- · Critical thinking, and analysis of nursing practice · Engaging in professional, and therapeutic relationship · Maintaining capabilities for important nursing practice · Conducting assessments comprehensively · Developing a suitable plan for effective nursing practice · Providing safe, responsive, and appropriate patient care · Evaluation of the outcomes to inform about the concerning things in nursing practice As per the case study, it can be seen that Toby becomes overwhelmed during the discharged period of the patient as he has not handled such cases previously. On shift he has forgotten to give IVAB to Mrs. Jones, one of the patients whose charges were on Toby. Another big fault of Toby is not taking the observation every 3 hours. It may be extreme regarding the health condition of the patient. One of the most responsible things of the nursing practice is to take proper observation of the patients (Lai et al. 2018, p.914). Furthermore, he forgets to complete the documentation. For preventive care in nursing practice, and before starting the treatment procedure, it is necessary to complete the documentation. Toby is just creating a haphazard situation for the patients, and also for himself. As a result of that he has to stay on duties even after the end of his shift (Calleja et al. 2019, p.18). RN, regulated health professionals are accountable and responsible ensuring their capabilities in the nursing practice. Evidence in this case study shows that Toby is facing an immense challenge maintaining himself, as well as his professional duties during his shift. On-going self-management and professional management is highly necessary in the responsible nursing practice. According to the Midwifery board RNs bear the responsibilities to develop themselves, providing information, and enabling people in taking responsibilities. Taking the necessary actions as per the requirements of the patients is the most important thing which Toby has to focus on at the initial level (Bakon et al. 2018, p.83). The necessary capabilities of the RNs are considering, and responding in a timely manner for well-being and safety of the patient and self. Evidence in this case has shown that Toby does not know the discharge process properly, and as a result of that he comes overly stressed. Providing information and patient education is part of the discharge procedure. In patient-centred care it is seen crucially (Murray et al. 2018, p.40). Active engagement with the profession promotes the integral role of nursing practice. RNs may delegate ethical, quality goal-oriented action depending on the comprehensive assessment, and available achievement for agreed outcome (Calleja et al. 2019, p.18). It takes responsibilities for evaluation of nursing practice including agreed priorities, plans, and goals that helps to revise the necessities accordingly. Critical thinking strategy is the best evidence in taking decisions (Chun Tie et al. 2018, p. 283). In order to provide quality and safe care to the patient Toby requires critical thinking. Question 2: Recommendations It is important to note each and every titbit of nursing practice. As per the case study, it can be assumed that Toby has their potentialities, and competencies for the nursing practices, however he is becoming stressed to manage the requirements as he has no previous experience. Just with the 8 weeks of working experiences it is quite a common thing to become overwhelmed with the work pressure. Here are several recommendations that might help to manage the necessities of the nursing practices. · Organizing: At the initial stage to maintain the work procedure, it is important to learn the organization. One RN should identify, and define the basic tasks of the duty hours. He should delegate the authority, and assign his responsibilities properly. Apart from that he should establish strong relationships with the patients whose responsibilities has ascribed to him as trustful relationships are crucial for the quality, safe care to the patients (Ashley et al. 2018, p.665). Chain of command for the new RNs, unity of command meaning the good and effective teamwork, and span of control are important things for good organization of the work procedure. Both the individual authority and the team authority should be understood for quality and safe nursing practice. Organizing can be helpful for the patient, and for nurses saving the time of the shift. RN should make a chart, and maintain it in the organization. He can take help of technologies to optimize the working schedule in a disciplined manner (Regan et al. 2017, p.250). · Communication: The responsible RN should be communicative to avoid any kind of obstacles. As per the case study it has been seen that Toby has not communicated with the Nursing-in --charge after changing the shift and he becomes stressful (Chok et al. 2018, p.250). Here understanding the responsibilities would be easy if he asks his questions and about doings. In any field communication is considered as the first necessity to handle, otherwise greater risks would be there increasing the risks in the nursing practices. Handoff, handover, sign-out, cross coverage, shift report, shifting procedures everything will appear clear if good communication procedures are maintained properly. It has played imperative contribution for both the safety of the patients and responsible nurses. Interchangeability of responsibilities between the shift, specialization, giving information, up-to-date information, and building good relationships with the patient evidence-based nursing practice explores the importance of good communication within the nursing practice (Rogers et al. 2021, p.11). · Technology use: in recent decades technological advances have entirely transformed the medical landscape. Nurses should use this to maintain their responsibilities easily. From taking the manual records to meticulous charting emerging technologies provides more accessibility for the patient centred care. Improving efficiencies, and communicating accurately, the innovative new technologies might really be helpful for the RNs (Hawkins et al. 2019, p.50). EMR (Electronic Medical Records) helps in transferring healthcare knowledge. Electronic records are the digital version of documentation including progression notes, problems, past medical histories, lab data, medication and more. It helps to improve the patient care setting the clarity of responsibilities in the nursing practice. Use of technology can help to save time, and chances of gap in the roles and responsibilities emerge comparatively less (Murray et al. 2018, p.40). Use of technologies can reduce the crucial problem linearly. Question 3: Strategies to balance transition period New nurses should gain a myriad of milestones. Most of the new nurses acquire collective signs after they transition from graduate nurses to registered nurses’ positions. However, the transition time is stressful, and challenging as it can be seen in the case of Toby. He is struggling to pose him securely in the nursing profession (Burmeister et al. 2019, p.150). Securing the position within a supportive workplace definitely helps serve effectively, even if the situation is not optimal, several things are there to ease the transition period in professional life (Oxelmark et al. 2018,p.620). Toby is losing the work life balance in this case. He could not attend the birthday party of his best friend, and there is a break in his daily life. Nurses like Toby, those graduate nurses who are just entering in the Registered Nurse position can follow these strategies to balance the work and personal life simultaneously. Improve organizational skills, and time management skills This is probably one of the biggest challenges that everyone faces in the transition period of professional life. For the new nurses it is common to appear overwhelmed as they leave the safety net of the instructors managing more patients at a time (Ryan& McAllister, 2019, p.285). Being punctual, and noting down the entire day's responsibilities may keep them on track as forgetting to do things in the initial stage of working life is a common error especially in the nursing practice (Reid et al. 2018, p. 70). The role and responsibilities of the nurses are heavier than any other profession. In the entire work schedule they have to keep to themselves about every single thing because a simple error can be destructive for the patient causing unexpected death or any other gap (Halcomb et al. 2018, p.70). In order to maintain the time, and improve the organizational skills new nurses may prepare a ‘to do’ list, establish the deadlines for every task, avoid multitasking at a time, delegating, and also the self-reward after accomplishing every task is important to keep themselves motivated. The case study focuses on Harry, a newly graduated registered nurse who is participating in his first graduate rotation. He has a problem balancing his professional and personal obligations with his everyday activities. Three main aspects of the case scenario will be outlined in the essay, and the first portion will analyse how well graduate nurse can perform their professional duties in light of the case study's data. Question 1: Rationale for the Graduate Nurse's Responsibilities and Roles
Registered nurses in Australia must meet the requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) in order to practise (Gómez-Villegas et al,2015). These requirements focus on providing care that is both evidence-based and Patient-centered. Registered nurses have a responsibility to provide treatment that is not only safe but also enhances the health of their patients. Due to Harry's numerous shortcomings in his professional job, the patient's situation has become more complicated. Upon reviewing the case scenario, it became clear that inadequate patient monitoring was one of the many issues that arose. At this point, Harry recalls that he should have given Mrs Williams her IVAB. According to the standards set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board, specifically standard 3, which is titled "Maintains the competence for practising," registered nurses have a duty to react promptly to health and wellbeing concerns within their area of practice (NMBA,2018). For the last three hours, Harry had neglected to check on this patient. Harry is so busy keeping Mr Sommersby from leaving the hospital that he hasn't had time to fill out the admittance paperwork. According to the case scenario, Harry failed to keep tabs on the patient's condition. And then there's the fact that he fails to finish the required documents. In nursing practice, preventative care requires documentation to be completed prior to the initiation of any therapy. Harry is just causing chaos for the patients and for himself. That's why he needs to keep working even after his shift ends.
Registered nurses (RN) are licenced health professionals who are held to high standards of accountability and responsibility for their competence in the nursing profession (Cashin et al,2017). From what we can gather from this case study, Harry has a huge uphill battle to fight just to keep himself and his job together while on the clock. Responsible nursing practice requires constant attention to both personal and professional management. A registered nurse's duties include continuing education, sharing knowledge, and helping patients have more control of their lives, as stated by the Midwifery Board of Registration (NMBA,2018). In the beginning, Harry's primary concern should be attending to his patients' needs and acting accordingly. The competencies of a registered nurse include the ability to think about and act quickly to protect the health and safety of patients and themselves. Evidence in this instance indicates that Harry did not finish any of his patient records on computer on wheels (COWS) equipment, and as a consequence, he seems extremely agitated (Borbasi & Jackson,2015).
