Ensure that you read and adhere to the following instructions: When answering the assignment, layout your answers in a readable format and include all relevant working. If you make use of resources other than the lecture slides you are required to properly cite thee resources, as this is a networking unit you should use IEEE referencing style ✎ EditSign . Note that failure to include citations is a form of plagiarism. Significant sanctions may apply to cases of plagiarism up to and including exclusion from further study towards your degree. Your assignment will be submitted electronically via TurnItIn on the unit's iLearn page. Ensure that you adhere to the following requirements:  The filename should be in the following format: (assuming your student ID is 44332211) o 44332211_cp2250a2.pdf  Your submissions must be a single document in PDF format -- do not submit a MS-Word file (or anything else other than PDF).  Do not include a cover sheet of any kind.  Do not include the text of any of the questions in your submission.  Do not use double-spacing.  Use a sensible, clean font, 10-12 pt in size.  Hand-written or scanned submissions will not be accepted.  Your report should not exceed 10 pages (excluding any bibliography). o How much you write for each question is up to you. o However each question has some guidance to the amount you should expect to write.  Please be aware that this is purely indicative and should be treated as a guide only.  The 10 page limit for the entire report is however a strict limit. Failure to follow any of the above requirements will result in a loss of 10 marks for each infraction. Also note that citation of a non-reliable source may also incur a penalty (eg. Wikipedia). Finally, please note that late submissions will not be accepted without an approved special consideration request. https://ieee-dataport.org/sites/default/files/analysis/27/IEEE%20Citation%20Guidelines.pdf https://ieee-dataport.org/sites/default/files/analysis/27/IEEE%20Citation%20Guidelines.pdf Assessment For all questions in this assignment not only content but also presentation will affect your mark. You will lose marks if there are problems with the presentation, particularly with clarity. This means that your answers to each question should be a coherent statement and that the spelling and grammar of your submission will be taken into account in assessing its presentation. For full marks, your answers should be well argued, clear, and coherent. The standards of marking described in the unit outline will be applied to this assignment as relevant to the assignment topics. In addition, the following particular standards will be applied in marking this assignment:  Spelling and grammar: o Assignment submissions with multiple more than 4 spelling or grammatical errors will not achieve a grade higher than distinction; submissions with more than 8 such errors will not achieve a grade higher than credit.  Clarity: o Ambiguous or poorly worded answers will receive a grade no more than a pass for the individual question. o Minor issues of clarity will receive a grade no more than credit for the individual question.  Correctness of approach taken and answer obtained: o Incorrect answers with the correct logic or approach will receive no more than a pass for the individual question. o Correct answers with incorrect logic or approach will receive no more than pass for the individual question. o Incorrect answers with no explanation of the approach taken or with the incorrect approach will receive a fail grade for the individual question. The questions will be marked individually, the marks totaled, and a final grade assigned that is no more than indicated by the total marks, and no more than allowed by the standards specified above and in the unit outline. Submission Submit on the iLearn page under ‘Assignments Section’. The submission is with a tool called TurnItIn. This cross checks for online papers and other student papers for any plagiarism (copying). In short –DON’T COPY– or get others to do your assignment, we are pretty good at catching people out and the consequences can be severe. Do not trust anyone who will take money to do assignments. They can take money from several students, return the same assignment, and you get caught. They don’t care about you, but we do! Assignment 2 Scenario A small Sydney based software firm, Ansible Systems has recently expanded by buying a competitor Playbook Services, which is based in Brisbane. As the staff are located in separate cities the owners have decided to integrate the systems of the two companies whilst leaving staff in the same physical locations. You have been hired as a consultant by the newly merged company to advise how best to integrate the networks of both companies into a unified whole. The current networks of each company are in the associated PowerPoint file (we have chosen PowerPoint as it is readily available for students and is an adequate diagramming tool). As you are a consultant in this scenario you must answer the following questions in a report format as if you were writing a business proposal. The Brief Your consulting brief consists of four parts: Question 1 [15 marks] — WAN There are a number of network connectivity options available to enable network traffic to flow between the two offices. Create two different proposals for connecting the two company networks. Your report should include a comparison of the two approaches showing how each compares in terms of security, performance, operational expenditure, and capital expenditure. Question 2 [15 marks] — Backbone Network The corresponding teams from each company should have full access to each other’s resources whilst limiting members of other teams access to these resources. For example, the accountants and accounts clerks from both companies should be able to access accounting records for both companies but the software developers from either company should not be able to access the accounting records. Describe the changes that you would make so that traffic can be shared between each corresponding team within each company whilst keeping traffic from different departments separate from each other. In answering this question you should think about what you have learned about private address spaces, subnetting, and optionally, VLANs. Question 3 [15 marks] — Security Given the new situation the now merged company’s management team would like to bolster their overall security posture. Provide an itemised description of changes or additions to the network that would improve the security posture of the company. For each proposed change or addition, describe what benefits, and detriments, would the change have on the performance, operation, and security of the network. Options that you may consider include, but are not limited to, Firewalls, NAT, IDS/IPS, authentication, services, WiFi placement, additional servers, or consolidated servers. Remember that your role is as a consultant, and that you have been hired by the company to perform a security analysis. Your report should include not only existing controls, but also controls for those risks you have identified that currently have no mitigation. This means that you are simply making a proposal, of what you think that your client should do. Of course, your client can choose not to implement your proposed changes but that isn't really the point here. What you need to do is simply identify what are the risks and the most appropriate controls to mitigate those risks. Question 4 [15 marks] — Network Diagram Create a new diagram showing the logical topology of the combined network that includes all the changes from the previous three questions. As question 1 asks you to create two different proposals you will need to diagram both proposals. If you are able to document both proposals in a single diagram in such a way that it is clear that you are offering two alternatives you may do so. If you prefer, you can create two separate diagrams. You are welcome to use any diagramming tool (including PowerPoint) as long as the diagram is clear. Please note that scanned diagrams will not be accepted. Also, please ensure that your submission is a single PDF file, do not submit your diagram(s) separately, rather you must embed your diagram(s) into your report and submit only a single PDF. 1. Answer 1: Approaches for network connectivity (WAN)
The network merger of "Ansible Systems" and "Playbook Services" requires selection of specific strategy which will be defined in the provided proposal. The first proposal for network integration of these two companies is:
To: Managing Director, Ansible Systems, Sydney, Australia.
Subject: Network merger of "Ansible Systems" and "Playbook Services" with private leased line
Date: 1 November 2021
Respected sir/ madam,
It is a great news that you have successfully purchased one of your competitor "Playbook Services" and looking forward to merge the networks of both organizations. The leased line based private network connection will be best suited to your organization. As, this will be the private network based on the leased line, so, high security can be maintained for all the network related resources. The performance of both network and resource sharing will be very high. The employees of both organizations can share the used applications and data, so that, the operational expenditure can be possible. It is a costly option and it will take near by $15000 per year for its maintenance and implementation.
Looking forward for your replay.
The second proposal for network integration of these two companies is:
To: Managing Director, Ansible Systems, Sydney, Australia.
Subject: Network merger of "Ansible Systems" and "Playbook Services" with cloud services and WAN implementation
Date: 1 November 2021
Respected sir/ madam,
The merger of network for "Ansible Systems" and "Playbook Services" can also be possible with internet based WAN implementation and all the used application as well other resources will be implemented through the cloud. The collective implementation of WAN with cloud services like SAAS can help in easy merger of your both networks. For maintaining security, firewalls can be implemented. Because of using cloud services, the performance and availability of network will be high. The cloud implementation can easily maintain the operational expenditure requirements of your organization. It is...
