Academic Reading Workshop = 10% (5 from principles/5 from expository) Due: Week 5 I’m sure you are starting to realize that the online college experience is very text heavy. But did you know that research shows most college and university students are not prepared for the reading workload that post-secondary presents, nor are they schooled in how to approach their post-secondary reading assignments? The purpose of this assignment is to help you with these issues. It is to encourage you to read more, and to develop your personal/academic reading practice. I hope this class helps you to succeed in all of your courses, and to come to appreciate your reading assignments by applying and reflecting upon the reading strategies discussed in class. To begin, select ONE article/case study to complete this assignment – reader’s choice! Please provide the link or a screen shot.] Make sure it is an academic source selected from the NC databases. It must be about BUSINESS, however loosely. It may be from the last workshop! It may have been assigned by another teacher! It may be linked here! Follow the below outline for the article you read and submit. Make sure you save your submission properly [Rubric to follow!] You may submit a completed form OR a more creative attachment like I did in my video. 1. Copy and Paste the APA format for the bibliography here from the library database. Select ‘unformatted text’ when you paste and you may have to tweak the spacing. 2. What is the writer’s subject? The writer’s purpose? Is there is a thesis? Highlight or copy and paste your response here: 3. Why do you consider this an academic source? Tell me or show me on the pdf/paper copy. Is it a typical ‘article’, a case study, or another type of source? Did the writers do their own research or rely on the research of others? 4. The READER: Why did you select this article? Describe one member of the intended readership. Are you a member of this readership? 5. Consider the language. Describe the writer’s voice including tone/attitude. What is the level of FORMALITY of language? List 3 words or expressions you had to look up and define them. OR – translate them into your own language for me. 6. Which Rhetorical Mode or modes are used to develop the writer’s point of view? [argument, process, narrative, cause/effect, description, classification, for examples.) Identify at least TWO! 7. Highlight or copy and paste a “direct quote”, AND a paraphrase OR a summary the writer integrated into their article. Colour code the citation in the References as well. Show me that you know where it came from. 8. Identify the Conclusion. Was it a strong finish? Does the conclusion sum up and follow up? 9. Tell me about your reading experience: [How long did it take you to read it. How many times did you read it. Did the reading challenge you? Did it interest or frustrate you? Which reading strategies (skimming, questioning, annotating, listening to audio, translating, crying . . .) did you employ for this reading?] 10. What has influenced your professional (for work) or academic (for school) reading in the past? For example – I have adhd and I am a very slow reader. I also forget what I’ve read and have to go back and re-read constantly. You would hate to watch a movie with me! Be honest. I love this stuff! The goal is to establish a reading practice that supports you in all of your reading assignments! Please follow the submissions guidelines posted to blackboard. Give yourself at least an hour for a total of 1 typed pages saved to one document in Word. Do not submit more than ONE page. Make sure your work is proof-read and edited. Alternatively, or in addition, you may submit an annotated PDF OR screenshot like I did in the video. As long as I can find your 10 answers highlighted, copy and pasted, or written up, be as creative as you like. Do this assignment with a partner or alone. Some answers are personal but some can be shared. The best reading/writing experiences are shared.
