Introduction
Parenting has been reckoned as one of the most challenging tasks
that people have to deal with. In fact, raising children is more like a process of building responsible citizens with the help of social, psychological and educational resources available. The aspects related to the structuring of knowledge and attitude of parents are core components of developing psychology of children in a family as well as these components help in enhancing the cognitive skills (Arakelyan, Maciver, Rush, O'hare & Forsyth, 2019).
Family centred and strength based approaches are applied in this context to ensure that assistance to families and parents is provided. This is done with regard to ensure that the cognitive skills of children as well as their overall development in the early childhood phase are achieved effectively. The following is the analysis of the strength based and family centred approaches and the way they are useful in developing parenting frameworks for early childhood.
The Strength Based Approach
One of the two major approaches to help families in the modern context is strength-based approach. Founded by Donald Clifton in 19th century, the initial approach of this framework was limited to address the psychological needs of individuals. However, due to the utility that this approach could provide, it is now widely accepted form of support given such as in the fields of education and social work (Jach, Sun, Loton, Chin & Waters, 2018).
Strength based approach works on the assumption that human beings are resilient and determinant about the choices that they make especially when they are confronted with negative situations in life. People devise their own ways and methods to locate the helpful resources in order to deal with the adverse conditions of life and this is exactly the point, through which strength based approach is carried forward.
Additionally, the interventions designed on strength based approach let individuals deal from the front about the issues that they have. In other words, the future outcomes of any action are set in the light of the strengths and skills that one may develop in the course of time. For example, if parents are having problems in dealing with an autistic child in the family, the core strength of the family will be recognised as love and support given to that child (Mas et al., 2018).
The focus of the strength-based approach will be to highlight support as the key factor in alleviating the psychological, educational as well as the social status of the child and that cannot be possible without the assistance of the parents in the process (Gibson, Crockett, Dudgeon, Bernoth & Lincoln, 2020). Thus, strength based approach is more like helping people to know the change that is going to affect their lives positively.
In the context of the above, strength based approach majorly functions over some factors such as dignity and the value of living. These approaches work mainly on the abilities and skills of people, which they need to recognise and to apply to enhance their parenting levels. They need to identify the kind of similarities they have towards the basic assumptions of others that is they can have similar skills like the other parents.
Thus, there can be a common ground, over which rules of functions can be structured. There is a wide variety of rules and provisions, which strength-based approach commonly takes (Mas et al., 2018). There are two folded aspects of making of proposing the changes in the lives of parents to ensure that they improve the quality of living of their child as well. The two dimensions/folds mentioned above are linked with the changes, which can only be brought by ensuring that parents are the agents of this change.
Parents need to understand that only they can change the lives of their child and they can even design positive environment to monitor and control the change that they have brought forward. This process of change can be understood by the example of the autistic child mentioned above; the child can have a better atmosphere to lean...
