BMG732 Assessment 1: Operations Strategy Essay Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate that you are able to raise a structured and reasoned argument about a particular operations management topic. This essay will enable you to understand the link between operations strategy and organisational performance. Date: The due date of the essay is 9am Wednesday 27th March 2019. Weighting: 15% of your course mark. Learning outcome(s) addressed: 2. Explain the link between an operations strategy and organisational performance. Requirement: You are to write an essay which answers the following question: Has the emergence of operations as a strategic discipline led to an increase in organisational performance ? Your essay must answer the question, with clear application of relevant concepts and theory, based on independent secondary research (including peer-reviewed academic journals), and be logical and articulate in its presentation. You will note that whereas we have discussed the parameters of operational performance, consideration of which provides an important framework, the subject of the essay involves the overall performance of the organisation. Organisational performance is often considered in terms of competitive advantage and market share - the 'big picture' which strategy seeks to address - rather than the day- to-day aspects of operational performance. Your essay should consider the relationship between the operations function and overall strategy and performance of the organisation. Your essay should be approximately 1,500 words (approximately 3 pages). Please refer to the marking schedule, below, and the marking rubric on Moodle. Introduction
The American Public Human Services Association (APHSA) defines a demarcation between the systemic and systematic approach when it comes to monitoring the performance of an organisation. A systemic approach only deals with the structure and procedure for the implementation of a new strategy of performance improvement. While a systematic approach takes into concern the whole organisation when dealing with the process of improved performance and better outcome.
Based on this concept, an organisation can be segregated from a company because a company has a systemic approach for performance improvement, while an organisation has a systematic approach for the same. Operations are the daily activities that take place in an organisation. These play a major role in daily organisational performance. In order to take an organisation to a new level in the business market, strategic application of this concept is extremely useful.
Organisational performance
Performance has always been an objectionable concept and different definitions can be given for this concept in variable disciplines such as in an airline organisation performance means something else when compared with the educational organisation. As mentioned by Jenatabadi (2015), every organisation has a different objective and perspective of working. Based on this, organisations perform variable activities to accomplish their goals and objectives. Moreover, it is these activities, which when performed in repeated context lays down the path for success.
Success cannot be achieved without performance and in order to perform better continuously, performance monitoring is required. As argued by Miller (2016), organisational performance depends upon the outcome received, which is a broader concept that includes what organisations produce, and accomplish with that production. Not only this, an organisational performance depends upon every sector working with it, which therefore, includes sectors such as product marketing, profitability, performance of the customer support team, competitive advantage, financial team and much more.
However, it may vary from organisation to organisation such as in an airline; organisation performance may be calculated based on the number of tickets sold and customer satisfaction while on the other hand in real estate sector performance may be calculated based on the joining of new clients. Whatever could be the basis of performance calculation; nevertheless, one major factor remains common and that is the ‘operation’. Performance has always been calculated based on the operations performed in an organisation in day-to-day basis.
Operations as a strategic discipline
Operations are the day-to-day business activities that are performed within an organisation. Operations vary according to the goal and objectives but play a distinctive role in achieving overall success of an organisation. Operations and operation management are two complementary terms where is...
