This week's textbook readings include Chapter 1 and Chapter 5.
Chapter 1 helps introduce the book and course by presenting a number of different perspectives into thinking about leadership and posing questions that we should address as we begin our study into the topic. One of the quotes in Chapter 1 is probably one that you've seen before: "Leaders are thought to do the right things, whereas managers are thought to do things right" (p.10). That quote provides a nice segue into the second chapter of the week.
Chapter 5 presents an introduction to values, ethics, and character. Worthy of an entire course itself, the concepts in Chapter 5 provide a foundation for launching further into our study of leadership, teamwork, and organization.
YourTextbook Reflectionassignment for this week is designed to get you thinking about a range of (related) topics and to have you succintly describe your (informed) thoughts on the questions. Remember, you need to shoot for 6-ish typed pages, in total, for all of your responses. Choose your words wisely, show that you've processed the material from the chapters, and connect the material to your professional roles--to explain things that you've experienced and/or thoughts and lessons that you can carry with you into your roles in future. Use your own words--if you need to make a short citation or reference to something in the chapter, simply put it in quotes with a page number. These assignments are to be individual reflections and not research reports.
Choose three of the following four questions to answer (Chapter 1):*
1. How would you define leadership?
2. Are some people the "leader type" and others not the "leader type"? If so, what in your judgment distinguishes them?
3. According to the interactional framework, effective leader behavior depends on many variables. It follows that there is no simple prescription for effective leader behaviror. Does this mean effective leadership is merely a matter of opinion or subjective preference?
4. Generally, leaders get most of the credit for a group's or an organization's success. Do you believe this is warranted or fair?
Choose two of the following three questions to answer (Chapter 5):*
5. How do you believe one's basic philosophy of human nature affects one's approach to leadership?
6. Identify several values you think might be the basis of conflict or misunderstanding between leaders and followers.
7. Could two different groups have quite different ethical climates if the same people were members of both?
