Procedure for identifying hazards
Hazard identification: It is a process which is used to analyse if there is any harm with respect to a particular situation, material or things. Hazard identification is frequently used to illustrate the entire process of risk assessment. Therefore, hazard identification helps to identify the risks and the hazards w
hich are likely to cause harm potentially.
Create a process to identify hazards at the planning, design and evaluation stages of any change in the workplace
One of the ultimate causes of workplace injuries, poor health and accidents is the failure of the management to identify the workplace hazards. Thus it is necessary that an effective safety process is created to identify and assess the hazards. Therefore, in such circumstances it is the management of the organization along with its employees who must take following actions in identifying and elimination of hazards:
1. There must be collection and review of the information about the hazards and is likely to be there in the workplace.
2. There must be inspections in the workplace on regular intervals which will assist in identification of new and chronic hazards.
3. There must be proper investigations of various injuries occurred, incidents happened and close calls or near misses in order to find out the underlying hazards, the causes of such hazards as well as the safety and health program limitations.
4. Similar incidents of hazards happened must be group together and then trends them with respect to the injuries, illness and hazards which must be identified and reported.
5. There must be considerations associated with emergency or situations which are non-routine.
6. There must be proper understanding on the seriousness and likelihood of the incidents which will be evolved from each hazards identified and this information may be used to initiate corrective measures (USDOL, 2021).
Procedure for assessing risk
The risk assessment process in the workplace will be as follows:
1. Identification of the hazards: It is necessary to identify the risks faced by the business and the employees. These may be natural disasters, biological hazards, workplace accidents; intentional acts, hazards due to technological failure, chemical hazards, mental hazards and interruption in power supply.
2. Determining who will be harmed due to the hazards: The organizations must identify the hazards and decide the ways in which the employees can be harmed due to these business activities or external factors causing such risks. Thus, for every hazard the management must determine the steps and find the ones who be harmed if such risk happens.
3. Evaluation of the risks and decide on the various precautions which can be initiated: Once the risks are identified, it’s time to consider how these risks might occur and how severe will be the impact and consequences of such risks. Through this process it can be analysed which risk needs to be prioritized first and will help to lower the risk level.
4. Record the findings and implement them: The record and the risk assessment plan must show that there is a proper check of the workplace, evaluation of the ones who will be impacted, controlling and dealing with the apparent hazards, will assist in initiating precautionary actions to keep the risks level low and involve all the staffs in the risk management process.
5. Review the assessment and update it as per the requirements: As the new equipment, system and the people are implemented there are risks of a new hazard. Thus there must be continuous monitoring and update of the evaluation process to stay above the top of the new hazards.
