Major Essay Value: 40% Word Length: 2,500 words ASSESSMENT 3: Write a theoretical essay on of the rise and/or impact of ‘global media’ on a major city or country of your choosing, preferably within the Asia-Pacific region. The title of your essay will be: “Global Media in ______” (insert name of city or country). You can choose to have a subtitle if you wish. In the essay, you should: • Define ‘global media’ (as opposed to local media, if there is such a thing?), and offer a theoretical explanation of what the term means and represents (using your Thussu textbook and other unit reading material). • Explain the different reasons for global media’s formation in, or influence on, the city or country of your choosing. You are to think about the factors or circumstances that enabled global media to thrive or gain influence and prominence in that city or country. • Explain the social, cultural, political and economic impacts of global media presence in that city or country. (It would be useful to provide factual examples that can illustrate or demonstrate the influence and changes that you are describing in your essay.) • One possible question to ask: Are there diasporic elements present in the ‘global media’ of that city or country? If so, is this obvious or subtle, and in what shape or form? • This is a research essay, so you must incorporate key theories and concepts of global media – from the unit as well as your own scholarly research – to critique the development of ‘global media’ more broadly. Note: Please include in-text references and provide a full reference list on the last page of your assignment. As a general guide, a theoretical essay such as this requires at least 2 full pages of references.

Understanding Global Media
Before we delve deeper into the aspects of Global media, let us focus on the two key terms “Global” and “media. So let’s get started with the latter, as media can be referred as different means relating to communication like television, radio, internet, etc. It is very effective in playing a very important role as it shapes the human mind effectively. Now media has been instrumental in aggravating the globalization. As opined by Hathaway et al., (2017) it is so because that the increase in the cultural, economic as well as the technological influence has led to the integration between the countries. As soon as it went into the ears of the western media or global media to be precise they start intruding into the personal lives of the people and lingered without the people even conceiving the fact. Now Mumbai is one of the city which has the maximum number of population and is also known as the media hub of the country. Whenever people from abroad want to visit India the first name that pops up is Mumbai so it has that kind of popularity. Keeping aside that fact, the media in Mumbai has consequently registered a kind of explosive growth over the two decades that made it one of the fastest growing industries. In addition to this, the global media has also set its foot in Mumbai as the rising rate of investments mandated by the foreign media which is furthermore assisted by the private sector which has enhanced the infrastructure entertainment of Mumbai up till a great extent.
Since it is backed by numerous private companies therefore the global media has engulfed the local media. Now coming to the aspect of local media. Let’s take for example the local news channels in Mumbai which runs mostly in Hindi that counts the print media as well. Now it is good to cater to the people in the national language, i.e the audience. Now the audience is not characterized in terms of language. There are numerous Indians living in India who cannot even speak or understand Hindi. Therefore, they will look forward to English news provided to them by the global media channels. Let’s take the people from Kerala living in Mumbai as well as the Parsi community they contribute to a large sector in the entire populace in Mumbai and strongly detest Hindi as a language. As opined by Curtin (2016) now language has emerged as a key definitive factor for the emergence of the global media. Other than that the local media channels like the daily soaps have access to limited resources and they shoot inside a studio. It is completely unrealistic and unappealing to the people. Now, there is a factor, it might be appealing to the audience of the older generations but does not appear to the newer and younger generations. Having said that, it is also important to take note of the fact that the older generations are slowly delving with interest into the global media channels showcasing English serials. In addition to this, one such significant aspect among them being the increasing interest in the web series. Now the citizens in Mumbai surprisingly take interest in the foreign series rather the Indian one (despite it being shot in India). Still, they tend to watch more and more foreign werbseries as statistics say they consider the Indian webseries as completely worthless, that might appeal to other cities but not to Mumbai.
Globalization and established roots of Media
Dissemination pertaining to the information as well as the process of printing has consequently become less time consuming as well as hassle free. It is in this regard, Globalization has been instrumental in bridging the distance as well as the time gap resulting in between countries. Now the scene has changed here in Mumbai since it is the hub of media therefore it gains access to the global media and integrate them with their local media. However, global media does not need a third grade local media from Mumbai to loom large in Mumbai, it can engulf the community all by itself. Along with this, the News as well as its features that were previously not provided to access to have now become affordable and invaded the life of millennials (Nadeem, 2018). The younger generations in Mumbai looks more upto the global media as they are captivated by the presence. Establishing the aura is one of the most significant aspects as the Global media has been instrumental in doing. Now the culture in Mumbai has always been heavily influenced by the Western culture and they are believed to be the ones who have imitated the Western culture the most. Now since the global media has entered into the heartland of Mumbai therefore they gain access to various web content which they are not allowed to see at their see. They however do so, as it is very natural outside India also, so once they see content such as sex and nudity the mumbaikars harbors the...
