Assignment guidelines – Introduction to Evidence based practice A 3,000-word written assignment Conduct a literature search using the skills developed during the module on the topic provided. Explain and reflect on the literature searching process and include a table of the search terms used (see appendix below). Choose 5 pieces of literature from your final search results and describe them, comment on why you chose them, their findings and their relevance to your nursing practice. 100% Weighting 40% Pass Mark Introduction (approx. 300 words) Introduce the assignment and clearly outline what you aim to do. Tell the reader what will be included in the assignment and in what order. Introduce, define and discuss the importance of evidence based practice in relation to your field of nursing including the use and definition of evidence based practice Search (approx. 800 words) Introduce your search terms. Outline how you performed your literature search i.e. what database(s) you used, inclusion and exclusion criteria, any other filters used and provide rationale for these decisions with references. CINAHL database to be used Outline how you identified your key articles. Include enough detail so that your search could be conducted by the person reading it. Include a copy of your search in the appendices Discussion (approx. 1000 words) Give an overview of the 5 key articles in detail, using the following questions; 1. What was the study about? 2. How was it conducted? 3. What were the findings? In point 2 remember to use research terminology e.g. quantitative, qualitative and provide definitions to explain these terms. Conclusion (approx. 300 words) This should summarise how you conducted the literature search and the results that you found as well as the key points from your articles. Revisit the original research question to ensure this has been answered. Implications for practice (approx. 300 words) Outline the implications for your practice as a nurse. What has the evidence added to your knowledge base? Identify strategies from the studies you selected and consider how they could be implemented in practice. What further information would you like to know? How does the process of searching for the evidence inform your practice? Were there gaps in the evidence? This is where you bring what you have identified through the research and formulate your own recommendations. References (word count not included) Reference the assignment throughout using the LSBU-Harvard system, and include a reference list. Appendices (word count not included) Add this table, label it and refer to it in the text Database Searched Date Searched Search Strategy Used (Keywords, phrases, subject terms) Limits/filters (Date range, language) No. of Results General tips: · Succinct writing: keeping within the word limit (3000 words) · Good, clear presentation with correct grammar and spelling · Use supporting references for the points that you make. · All work must use font size 12 with double spacing · Avoid using the first person · Save in word under your student number · Add completed front page on moodle Submitting your assignment Ensure you give yourself plenty of time to submit your assignment as late submissions will not be marked. Files saved/exported (name/place)? Keywords, authors for future searches? You will need to justify the decisions you make e.g. •Reasons for choosing the date range – has there been a change in research practice / introduction of new technology or ideas? •. You may wish to re-run your searches regularly to find new publications You don’t have to just search for key words or concepts. Other searches can be useful e.g. •Author search •Citation search •Grey Literature (‘unpublished’ or non-academic publications) Remember literature searching is an iterative process you may need to add /or remove keywords to improve your search strategy Example Introduction This essay will start by defining evidence-based practice and describing the literature search process the researcher used in selecting the 5 major evidence-based articles on CBT effectiveness in depression treatment. The chosen articles will be critically analysed, the aspects to consider and the articles validity, reliability and transferability to nursing practice and the implications of the literature search process in evidence-based nursing practice (Cypress, 2017). Also, from carrying out this literature search process, new insights will be synthesised and related to the researcher’s practice setting using other evidence-based literature apart from the 5 selected articles, to understand why CBT is effective in treating depression. SEARCH METHODS According to Ndinoshiho (2008), CINAHL hosted by EBSCOhost is a well-known comprehensive trustworthy electronic academic database system that helps healthcare practitioners especially nurses to find evidence-based articles to help in decision making and practice improvement for a better outcome for patients care. A search of the CINAHL database will be undertaken and a step by step discussion including the different search terms, and Boolean operators used in the literature search procedure will be presented, highlighting the exclusion and inclusion criteria likewise the rationale for the choice of the papers. Stevens (2013) states that there are limitations that decide precisely what information the researcher wish to find in the literature search to enable which studies to be included or excluded in the search result. This is highly important because according to Hulley (2007) establishing the inclusion criteria will help turn the research topic into a viable question. Similarly, Patino and Ferreira (2018) stated that when deciding upon the inclusion criteria, one should consider how broad or narrow they wish their question to be. A narrow topic, for example, would be quicker to research but the writer may have problems finding relevant studies to review (Ely et al., 2005). According to Hastings and Fisher (2014), to establish the criteria, the researcher needs to clearly define each aspect of the research question, to clarify exactly what they wish to focus on, and consider if there are any variations they wish to explore. Evidence-Based Practice Evidence-based practice means finding 'Evidence-Based' resources designed for a particular intervention that will provide quick access to the latest evidence, to inform our decision-making process on whether to apply a particular intervention such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) for Depression (Ludmer et al.,2015; Rosenberg and Donald,2015). This was done by the author through a database search for clinical trials, systematic reviews; and guidelines to decide the best current evidence available CBT effectiveness in treating service users for Depression (Meline, 2006). FIRST SEARCH The researcher started her search by first going to EBSCOhost website, and clicking CINAHL database, this helped to undertake the search using related search terms as shown in Appendix (1), including reports on CBT as an intervention for service users with depressive symptoms, from 2010 to 2020. The researcher typed in the constructed keyword from the topic question such as ‘cognitive behaviour therapy’ into the top column, and then typed mental* at the centre column with truncation symbol. Truncation was used because using only one search term for each of the topic concepts did not find enough results. Also, the author of a study could use a different term to describe something than the researcher did (Polkinghorne, 2005). Combining the two words with AND then typed Effectiveness into the last column, combining the three words with AND using the Boolean logic operator. Before searching, the researcher activated the peer review and English box in the advanced search. This search produced 528 literature articles, systematic reviewed, English‐language articles that reported CBT implementation for service users with depressive symptoms but still require trimming down. The search term spellings used were in both British and American English (Fishel, 1985; Ross and Estabrooks, 2008). SECOND SEARCH As soon as the first literature search has been done with, then it is essential to adopt the exclusion and inclusion criteria, especially when carrying-out electronic database search as there are various features that mitigate the quality of the required evidence. Hence, the subsequent searches were executed through the activation of the specified exclusion and inclusion criteria, as the features are already built in CINAHL database system, which is shown on the left-side freely available to be activated during a database search as source type, narrower and limiters. By selecting any of the limiters, it automatically shows the criteria included while those not selected are excluded from the search. As a result, using the inclusion criteria by selecting the ‘full text’ menu, automatically removed articles that are not in full text thereby having 406 articles left but still require decreasing. THIRD SEARCH Developing the search exclusion and Inclusion criteria are relatively important because they guide the selection of the right literatures, required for the search topic, as well as omitting the immaterial ones. This is supported by Cleary, Hunt and Horsfall (2009) study which stated that most of the factors to consider in inclusion criteria should be time-frame, language, referenced literature and document type. Therefore, by selecting the published year as 2010 till date in the limiter, it automatically excluded papers published over a decade ago and includes articles within 10 years to present day. These time search criteria reduced the search result to more relevant articles. The search produced 327 literature articles and this limited the literature review to only articles that are more reliable to the topic question. Doing these narrowed the results to those that are specifically connected to the search terms and research question. FOUTH SEARCH This stage was very vital to the researcher’s search, as it enabled the addition of new conditions to capture the geographical location, which allowed the uncovering of literatures that assisted in answering the clinical question, thereby ensuring the search results to be only academic journals from that particular area. According to Dogherty, Harrison and Graham (2010), appreciating or understanding implementers’ role in enabling changes in clinical practice, which is centred on quality research outcomes, might drive the foundation for the appraisal and design of concrete plans for evidence‐based clinical practice.  Therefore, this shows that, in evaluating the effectiveness of intervention approaches and implementing changes in clinical practice, research is highly needed to spell out how approaches may be applied. Yet, having a large sizeable number of
