In Ch. 1 of the text, ethical leadership is illuminated metaphorically as the power to cast “light” (effective choices, decision-making) or “shadows” (darkness through ineffective, harmful, dysfunctional) on the people and organizations they lead (Johnson, 2021). Johnson (p. 2) suggests that unethical leaders cast shadows when they abuse power, hoard privileges, mismanage information, act inconsistently, misplace or betray loyalties, and fail to assume responsibilities. People prefer working with a good leader vs a bad leader. Yet, understanding what it takes to be an effective or ethical leader requires followers to critically recognize and examine the unethical behaviors of leaders that can cause harm and destruction to people and the organization (Kellerman, 2004). Does this resonate with you?

Watch
“Ethical Leadership: Philosophy, Power and Leading with a Crowd Behind You” from the
University Library.

In the video, Dr. Ciullo (2020) discusses her research on the structural frameworks of leadership and ethics and what moral challenges cause difficulty for leaders to be ethical.

After watching the video, think about a leader, supervisor, or manager you have worked for within the past 5 years that you consider to be unethical.

Identify
3 shadow behaviors exhibited by that leader, supervisor, or manager.

Select
one of Kellerman’s bad leadership types on pp. 33-37 of Ch. 1 in
Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership:
Casting Light or Shadow
that aligns with the 3 unethical behaviors you listed.

Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:

· How would you describe your philosophy of an ethical leader?

· How does your philosophy address the unethical leadership behaviors you identified?

Lawmakers, guardians, strict pioneers, and corporate pion
eers all have the ability to toss as much haziness as light. Misuse is more probable when initiative's shadow side is stayed away from. Pioneers "barely any even remember they are going with a decision, not to mention how to ponder the most common way of choosing," as per research. The supervisor I work under in my part time job reflects such showdown side of his leadership behaviour. From treating us like inferiors to shouting at us for no reason only because he can, he portrays the shadow side of the leadership behaviour. Among the three shadow behaviours exhibited by him, the first will be blaming us for every mistake he does, the higher management trusts him and he misuses that power invested on him. Secondly, he has a grandiose sense of self importance and he cannot kook past that. He is too full of himself to see the downside of his behaviour. And the final nail...
