Introduction
Communication is one of the key components that affect the care outcomes in healthcare; nursing professionals are expected to establish perfect communication norms with patients and their respective families. In fact, as per the general observation of the communication and the way, it should be carried out, it is important to view linear model that keeps sender, receiver and message, three basic things in communication in a line (Keutchafo, Kerr & Jarvis, 2020).
For nursing professionals, they have to deal with various workplace situations where they have to assess the patient’s condition and in this process, they have to recognise that verbal and nonverbal cues are deemed essential. Active listening and determining the style of questioning are applied to the assessment of the patient (James, Desborough, McInnes & Halcomb, 2020).
The following is the analysis of the theories and frameworks of listening actively and making question style ideal in the light of given case study of patient nurse communication. The patient has an injured foot and she is taken to the hospital. The nurse applies the two communication strategies with regard to fill the initial assessment form. There are some good communication skills, established here.
The Verbal Communication: Questioning Style
At first, it is significant to note here that verbal cues are established by literally focusing on the spoken content, message or by observing the gestures of the sender. These cues are further supported by the positive body language that nursing professionals must maintain throughout the communication (Purnell, 2018). For example, in the given video, the initiation of the assessment takes place at 1:10 minute when the following conversation is done:
Interviewer “What gender do you identify?”
Patient “Female”
Interviewer and “Your marital status “
Patient “Single, but I have a boyfriend “you know
Interviewer so, “He lives with you “
Patient “Yes”
Based on this approach, one can observe that nursing professional has asked two to three questions related to the gender of the patient and her marital status (Tiferes et al., 2019). Her active listening strategy is to know about the external support that the patient can have in the form of family. Once she asks about gender and gets back the information as ‘female’, her next question is carefully guided by the principle of knowing the kind of social security this patient has.
The questions about marital status or about knowing whether or not, the patient’s boyfriend is living with...
