Natural habitats are ecosystems where species live in a natural environmental setup. They are different than Zoos where animals are kept in cages and artificial setup. I visited Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. It is famous for elk herds and b
ighorn sheep. One could also find mule deer and very small population of moose. It is surrounded by range of Rocky Mountains in North–central Colorado. Park boasts of wide range of habitants or species ranging from Mountain Lions, Coyotes, Canadian Lynx, Bobcat, Foxes and American black bear. Elk’s form the maximum no. of individual species present in this world famous natural habitat site (Approx. 3,000)
Most of the predatory animals feed upon the smaller species, whereas Coyotes and Mountain lions feed upon elks and deer’s. All species have their specific area in the park where they are found in maximum concentration except few which are spread across its 1074 km square area. Animals have defined their hunting and breeding areas in the habitat where they are often found performing the respective activities. Coyotes hunt in both loose pack and alone. It is observed that animals or species living in a natural ecosystem generally adapt a daily routine and their defined spots for daily chores and activities. The park boasts of being home to around 70 mammals and approx. three hundred species of bird out of which close to 100 birds migrate every year in summers.
Moose is another specie which are found in maximum numbers after elk. Elk is a smaller deer specie which is smaller and more slender whereas Moose is the largest specie among deer and has huge palmate antlers. Park is majorly divided into five major regions- backcountry, bear lake(heart if the park), Alpine region, Big meadows and Wilderness. Alpine meadows is the most serene part of the park known for its extravagant and spectacular vistas. Rocky Mountain park also has many beautiful lakes- Fern Lake, Emerald Lake, Dream lake, Sprague lake and Bear Lake are one of the most photographed and known spots of the park known for their beautiful view. It also has many adventurous and recreational activities like mountaineering and rock climbing, camping and hiking. Covered around with many mountain peaks park proves to be a paradise of mountaineers. Some of the famous peaks are – Deer Mountain, Flattop Mountain and twin Sisters peak. All in all, it was a good experience to explore the interaction and behavior of species in a totally unique environment with surrounded by natural beauty hotspots
