We can learn a lot about effective communication by observing the communication of others. The aim of this assessment task is to analyse an authentic communication interaction in a healthcare setting and discuss
the impact
of a poor communication style on another person.

You are required to:

  1. Watch the video case study available below and select one character that has been impacted by the communication exchange; either the NURSING STUDENT or the PATIENT.

  2. Applying what you have learned about communication theories and models of communication, analyse the communication exchange and the communication styles of the CN (white shirt) and RN (blue shirt).

  3. Discuss the
    potential
    impact
of the communication exchange on the selected character (nursing student or patient) and the unfolding scenario.

  4. Then, formulate 2 key strategies with brief rationales explaining how each strategy supports and improves the communication style of the RNs using communication models, theories and communication styles. The goal is to create positive outcomes for all concerned.

You are expected to substantiate your analysis and strategies with contemporary literature. This paper should be presented as an academic essay, so include a brief introduction and conclusion. No headings or dot points should be used.

Transcript to accomany video [Scene – unknown hospital ward – two staff talking at ward station, approached by student] Student – Excuse me, I was wondering if I was able to do a set of obs on the patient in bed number 3? CN – No. Bed 3 had a very bad night. I want her to rest. RN – No, look, handover from night shift was that she’s had no sleep at all. She needs to be left alone to sleep now. Student – Okay, it’s just that on her chart it says she’s due for them every 4 hours … CN – Just do not disturb her. RN – Do not wake her up. Student – Alright, I won’t. I’ll be very quiet and I won’t wake her up. [Student enters patient’s room, and begins to take observations. Alarm sounds and patient is awoken.] CN – I knew it! Student – I’m really sorry, I was just taking your pulse. I didn’t mean to wake you. CN – For goodness sake! What was the last thing I said to you… Student – I didn’t mean to wake her up! CN – Do not disturb the patient. She is ill. This is a hospital. Are you an idiot? Student – I know, I’m really sorry. RN – This is why we can’t have students in this place. Honestly, they’re ridiculous. Now we’re going to have to try to get her back to sleep. Student – I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean to wake her up.

Communication skill is a skill set, which has to be developed throughout to be successful in the professional life and c
onsequently in career. A good communicator can express his opinion; articulate them properly with appropriate use of words. Therefore, the management of a company or the clients can get the text and subtext of his views. Lack of good communication skill is problematic and embarrassing for the professional life (Modi, Chhatwal, Gupta & Singh, 2016). Here, we will discuss about various aspects of communication skills on the basis of the given case study:
The case study elaborates a conversation between a medical student and two staffs of the hospital named CN and RN hypothetically. In the context, the girl had been told to do a routine check up or observation of a patient who is sleeping. The two staffs were trying to prohibit the student from doing so as the patient had not slept well earlier and he needed rest. Their attempt failed as the student ultimately went into the room of the patient to observe him. In the meantime, the alarm rang on mistakenly and the patient woke up. During the conversation, the staffs had not been courteous to the student at all. They prohibited the students in the forms of “just do not disturb her" or " do not wake up her". It might seem that the patient has been the most affected one, but the person who would be more affected is the student. She will be held responsible for the waking up of the patient. It might cost the student strict punishment in the form of suspension, which would turn out to be harmful for her...
