Week 7 – Assignment 1: Critique Narrative Research

Select and review one narrative research report. Instead of completing the Article Critique Assignment, pretend you are interviewing the author about the study elements and decisions made (the Article Critique Assignment should be used as a guide). Also, for this week, create a table or chart in Excel to share the qualitative information that you’ve been exposed to from the social media source you identified in Week 1.

Length: 2 pages

References: Include a minimum of five scholarly resources. Your critique should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect graduate-level writing and APA standards.

HERE IS WEEK 1 ASSSIGNMENT TO HELP WITH THIS ASSIGNMENT

1. Consider your own history of contact with research in the social sciences and education. Have you been exposed to several different paradigms or primarily to one?

Each research philosophy has its own strengths and weaknesses (Neville, 2005). In past, once when I was preparing a research report for my Master’s thesis I was exposed to positivism paradigm. The positivist approach provides an objective reality where researchers can compare their claims and finding (Popper, 1972).

2. How does your answer to question 1 stack up to Chalmers's criteria for a paradigm? Are there areas of your paradigm that are undeveloped or underdeveloped? If so, why are they undeveloped or underdeveloped

The positivist approach provides an objective reality where researchers can compare their claims and finding (Popper, 1972) which is related to Chalmers's criteria for a paradigm as he defines a paradigm is formed of the general theoretical assumptions and laws, and techniques for their application that the members of a particular scientific community adopt. Likewise, positivism is described as a natural scientist by which knowledge is gained from observed, atomistic events, existing external to social actors (Melnikovas, 2018). Though positivism relies on personal experiences but it lacks in concepts of cause, time and space events because they are not based on personal experiences, secondly it assumes all processes are recognized as variation in actions of people or relationships between people, moreover its adoption in other studies lacks in reliance of status quo (Business Research Methodology, n.d.).

Critical Analysis of Article

The research report I have chosen to critique is qualitative research by Zimmermann et al. (2018) on “How do depressed patients evaluate their quality of life? A qualitative study.” The study aimed to determine effect of depressive status on responses to items on the WHO quality of life assessment instrument (WHOQOL-Bref). The authors of the study presented limited literature about their topic of interest with no sub sections and headings as guided by Barbour (2011). The study lacked in providing a detailed review of literature regarding the topic of interest. The study was put forward on basis of qualitative method and therefore had used qualitative method of cognitive interviewing. A limited number of participants were included in study due to cognitive interviewing. Great attention was laid on the ethical consideration of study therefore informed consent was taken by study participants prior to interviewing process. The study was limited to females aged 18 to 60years old. The patients with any sort of bipolar disorder or psychiatric and or clinical comorbidities were excluded from study sample. However in terms of presentation of findings of the study the author’s did a great job since qualitative data is hard to handle and summarize but as per Barbour (2011) it is a good to indicate that you have set grounds for the claims you are putting forward through your study findings by providing phrases from interviews of study participants as an evidence to indicate your presented claims stronger. To, summarize the study findings and make basis of study conclusions the authors reported phrases from interviews as evidence to their study findings. This provides conditions for exploring perceptions about chosen topic of interest in light of participant’s views. (Schatzman and Strauss, 1973: 132)

Identify Research resource

More qualitative research information can be gathered through Facebook social media groups where people share what is making them depressed and seeking help from people to make use of better strategies to cope up with their depression trauma.
