Welcome Back: Unit 8 CM410 Welcome Back: Module 4 CM206 – Diversity and Culture INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION  As we read..  “At its core, diversity means differences. We share many differences with those we communicate with, such as gender, age, even socioeconomic class. Understanding how our differences can shape our communication helps us to understand how to craft messages that are relatable for those with whom we are interacting.” What is Diversity This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA http://thecollaboratory.wikidot.com/2013-spring-sociology https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/  Diversity is a concept that embraces a wide range of characteristics including: • language • ethnic background • dress • values • age • gender • educational background • religious observances • political interests • notions about social and community responsibilities • economic status • mental, physical disabilities As in our readings this week:  Strategies to employ which can help enhance our communication in a diverse context ICC! • Intercultural communication competence (ICC): • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in various cultural contexts • Numerous components of ICC, including: 1. Motivation 2. Self- and other knowledge 3. Tolerance for uncertainty COMMUNICATION  1) Motivation: • Person’s desire to foster intercultural relationships • Can be intrinsic or extrinsic • If a person isn’t motivated to communicate with people from different cultures, then the components of ICC discussed next don’t really matter. COMMUNICATION  2) Developing self- and other-knowledge: • Ongoing process that will continue to adapt and grow as we encounter new experiences • Mindfulness and cognitive complexity will help as we continue to build our ICC • Mindfulness is a state of self- and other-monitoring that informs later reflection on communication interactions. • Cognitive flexibility refers to the ability to continually supplement and revise existing knowledge to create new categories rather than forcing new knowledge into old categories. • Helps prevent our knowledge from becoming stale and also prevents the formation of stereotypes and can help us avoid prejudging an encounter or jumping to conclusions. COMMUNICATION  3) Tolerance for uncertainty: • Individual’s attitude about and level of comfort in uncertain situations • Some people perform better in uncertain situations than others, and intercultural encounters often bring up uncertainty.  Three ways to cultivate ICC are to: 1. foster attitudes that motivate us 2. discover knowledge that informs us 3. develop skills that enable us COMMUNICATION • Own your feelings and thoughts – take responsibility • Respect what others say about their feelings and thoughts • Engage in dual perspective – be person- centered to understand another’s perspective • Strive for accuracy and clarity • Be attentive to verbal and nonverbal cues • Understand diversity Guidelines This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY http://esheninger.blogspot.com/2013/11/pillars-of-digital-leadership-series.html https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/  Through our intercultural relationships we can learn a lot about the cultures of others as well as our own… This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA Cultural Identity Cultural identity is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's self-conception and self-perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture. http://thecollaboratory.wikidot.com/2013-spring-sociology https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/  “Personal identities are components of self that are primarily intrapersonal and connect to our individual interests and life experiences.  Social identities are components of self that are derived from our involvement in social groups to which we are interpersonally invested.  Cultural identities are components of self based on socially constructed categories that teach us a way of being and include expectations for our thoughts and behaviors.  Personal identities may change often as people have new experiences and develop new interests and hobbies. Social identities do not change as often because they take more time to develop, as you must become interpersonally invested” (Chapter 8) (LINK3)  [Author removed at the request of original publisher]. Be open to discussing other options. • Use the phrases please and thank you in the individual's native tongue • Respect different time zones when scheduling virtual meetings Guidelines  5) No Judgements • Respecting others means suspending judgment. • Three-step evaluation approach: • Describe the issue – Interpret - Evaluate • Strategies to help you suspend judgment when working with people of other cultures: • Take the time to reflect before saying or doing something • Accept the possibility that what occurred could be due to some other circumstances • Be aware of your personal biases. • Be patient, flexible, forgiving. Remain positive. • Avoid blaming others or making comments such as, "You don't understand" or "What's your problem?“ • Use descriptive and objective language. • Be mindful of terms people use to explain themselves and the world around them Guidelines COMMUNICATION This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA- NC •Culture is an ongoing negotiation of learned patterns of beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors. http://www.tanveernaseer.com/top-book-picks-on-organizational-culture-and-change-sally-helgesen/ https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/  Diversity at Work • Take on a role… • Your employer has asked to prepare a presentation on intercultural communication and the importance of considering diversity in communication. • You must prepare a PowerPoint presentation, creating one slide for each of the topics below. • Be sure to include your speaker notes in the Notes section below each slide. • Include a minimum of two relevant citations throughout your presentation.
