What are the implications for following (or not following) the IOM recommendations for nurses?

The IOM recommendations are a basic blueprint for nursing today and for our future (AANP) To not follow the outlined recommendations would be catastrophic to our general population and the overall health of our society as a whole. The goal of the IOM recommendations is to better the health of our population by focusing on preventative care, increasing the knowledge of nurses, as well as many other things that will better the population as a whole. If we follow these implications we will also be leading to advanced providers that will find themselves in leadership roles that will create better decisions to be made for the patients (American Nurses Association).

What implications are specific and relevant to the APRN?

Of the implication associated with the IOM, there are a few that are specific and relevant to the APRN. One of the goals of the IOM is to increase primary care providers. With the trend now being getting advanced degrees and encouraging nurses to take leadership roles, we have noticed an increase in primary care providers (Stringer, 2019). This was a goal of the IOM and is being executed. With the goals of continuing education we are also noticing more nurses graduating with their BSN instead of their associates (Stringer, 2019). This puts them in a good position to continue their education for the APRN and expand the nursing profession on a higher skill level. Another recommendation that is highly associated with APRNs is the goal of full practice authority. This goal is highly important to myself. To obtain a degree in one state and be able to practice completely without restrictions is incredible. However to obtain the same degree in a different state and not be able to practice without restrictions is absurd. We need to continue the push to get all 50 states to have no restrictions or limitations. As long as we continue to make it a push nationally, in time I am confident we will get there. Because of the IOM recommendations, we are well on our way. As of now 22 states are part of it (Stringer, 2019).

Considering the age of this report (2010), what are your thoughts about movement or change? Where do we need to go from here?

This report is now 12 years old and to some could be outdated. However we should not discredit the leaps and bounds the IOM has done for our communities. In the last 12 years we have increased leadership in nurses, created more BSN prepared nurses, allowed more states to allow full practice authority, increased diversity, and so much more. Based on this information my opinion would be we need to do what nurses do best. We need to stop, assess the situation, listen from many others including legislature, and develop a plan of attack for the next 10 years. If we can help the next generation be as productive, if not more, than this last decade was now that we have the tools. Nursing has come a long ways over the decades. I am excited to look back on this time in our life and know that this was the moment everything shifted for the good!

I agree with your perspective that as
nurses, we need to follow the IOM recommendations. It is preferable to have optimistic perception towards the guidelines because it caters to build new leadership roles. This simply connects with the primary care service providers’ enhancement in numbers, as you mention in your response to the second questions. The affirmative signs are linked to the...
