What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe over 100 different conditions that impair memory, behavior and thinking. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. While people who are aging normally may forget things as well, they will typically remember them later.
Review the study below to understand how researchers are using mobile applications to monitor Alzheimer patients:

Scenario:
Your research team was provided two datasets. One dataset contains data variables regarding an Apple smartwatch device and another dataset contains free living data. Free living data are step data collected on an individual, 24/7. Activities that represent the free living data include folding clothes, vacuuming the floor, and washing dishes. These data are link using a primary key. To explore the possibility of using the dataset - in addition to the other features (variables) - your research team was asked to focus on three specific features from the Apple smartwatch dataset:
heart rate, steps/day, and exercise type
. Based on this information, your team is tasked with identifying which feature should be used as a target feature (dependent variable) that may help explain early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
To Do:
- Choose the target feature (dependent variable) your research team will focus on and provide explanation for choosing this variable.
- How will analyzing these features assist with explaining day-to-day behavior and early onset Alzheimer's disease?
- What additional information is critical for you to know before starting this project
