WHAT?

What happened? What did you learn? What did you do? What did you expect? What was different? What was your reaction?

SO WHAT?

Why does it matter? What are the consequences and meanings of your experiences? How do your experiences link to your academic, professional and/or personal development?

NOW WHAT?

What are you going to do as a result of your experiences? What will you do differently? How will you apply what you have learned?

Reflective practice is an integral part of teaching practice and it highlighted in the AITSL standards, the EYLF and the NQS. As such, you need to understand what reflection is and how you utilise it to improve teaching practice. A model that is often used to scaffold reflection is the: What? So what? Now what? approach.

Effective reflection utilises all three of these levels to discuss and demonstrate understanding of content and an ability to review practice based on a wide knowledge base. This is what you will be asked to present for this assignment task – a reflective commentary that includes elements across these levels. You are asked to discuss the following quote:

“most elementary teachers are not adequately prepared to teach … science, and they hold negative views toward teaching … science. Additionally, elementary teachers do not feel confident about their … science teaching” (Thomson, DiFrancesca, Carrier & Lee, 2017, p. 2)

This quote came from a reading that was introduced in Week 2 and sums up the concerns faces by teachers in the early years with regards to teaching science. Does this quote resonate with your feelings? What roles do negative views and confidence play in the teaching of science to young children? You are required to present areflective commentaryfocused on this quote that demonstrates the three levels or reflection described above and showcases your understanding of teaching science to young learners. You will need to support your discussion in theSo What?andNow What?sections with links to literature and a reference list. You may use headings to structure your work and the use of first person is acceptable in this submission.
