Assignment details

The review of evidence requires you to review the video of a cardiac arrest scenario from several years ago. The guidelines for management of cardiac arrest have changed in the intervening period, so you are required to compare the performance to the current best practice evidence, analyse the video for quality of performance and identify the areas of performance that are in keeping with the evidence as well as those that are different to the evidence.

The BLS video provided on this page only must be used.

You need to analyse the video and identify practices that are in line and not in line with the ARC guidelines. Where practice is not in line with the guideline you should identify what the participants should be doing differently. You also need to consider best practice evidence for non-technical skills in emergency situations and using that evidence, critique the performance in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chMd3jjfrmo against that evidence, again noting what the participants should be doing if demonstrating evidenced based practice.

For all the discussion you need to link specifically to the ARC guidelines (do not use resuscitation guidelines from another country) and identify the research to provide evidence to support your comments. There are many journals with research into BLS and ALS so try and use these rather than a website (although the ARC website does provide reliable information as well. Examples of journals available via the library include: Resuscitation, Chest, Heart and Lung).

An example

Evidence Review

"It was noted the depth of compression appeared inadequate on multiple occasions. According to ARC guideline 5 (2019) depth of compression of at least 5cm is necessary to generate a cardiac output. Several studies have identified the importance of compression depth during cardiac arrest (Frank, 2015; Smyth, 2015; Simmonds, 2017; Alfonso & Sidonas, 2018). Franks (2019) study of survival from cardiac arrest found a statistically significant relationship between return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and compression depth. Those patients who had compressions of 6 cm had a greater likelihood of ROSC compared to those with a compression depth less than 5cm (p=0.01). ……………………………."

This is just an example (not to be re-used in your essay).

Introduction
Experiencing a cardiac
arrest or a drowning creates a trauma in a person and requires the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) process to bring back the normal breathing in the person. There are several steps to be followed in the process such as examining the airway, breathing, circulation and then applying the CPR technique by providing chest compressions. The video evidence provided shows a code blue simulation by a nursing team, which is generated in the case of a cardiac arrest experienced by a patient (YouTube, 2017).
The mentioned guidelines by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) are available, which must be followed in the delivery of the process. To produce a proper evidence-based practice by a nurse in such situation, the guidelines must be included in the knowledge and practical application. This will qualify the nurse in proper evidence-based practice. The interventions of the guideline have been updated through the years with several evidence-based practices. The rules and regulations are mentioned in the below.
The American Resuscitation Council Guidelines
The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) has set several guidelines for the best practices of examining and applying the techniques to resuscitate the airway, breathing, circulation, defibrillation and finally producing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Following the proper rules, a patient can be brought back to life within few minutes of experiencing a cardiac arrest. The guidelines are mentioned below:
Airway Guidelines
The airway is the primary factor to be considered and the path of airway must be cleared through several techniques. As mentioned by Newell et al. (2018), the airway management during resuscitation is a vital support, which must be continuously provided through passive oxygenation using an oxygen mask. The following guidelines must be followed:
· The airway must be properly examined for any obstruction in the pathway.
· The position of the person must not be changed as it can cause further spinal injury in an unconscious adult.
· The mouth must be kept open to keep the path clear.
· If any obstruction is found, the person must be rolled over to clear it.
· The CPR technique must be followed thereafter (Australian Resuscitation Council, 2021).
Breathing Guidelines
The breathing of a person changes when a cardiac arrest is occurring and the breathing cycle must be normalised to bring the person back to consciousness. As stated by Naim et al. (2021), rescue breathing is a necessity to be provided to the person experiencing an arrest before any mask can be arranged. This will increase the chance of survival. The guidelines are as follows:
· Looking for the movement of the chest and stomach to regulate the breathing
· The ratio of compression must be 30:2 to rescue the breaths (Australian Resuscitation Council, 2021).
· Using the bag mask method of breathing or mouth-to-mouth technique for outpatients
· Thirty compressions followed by two breathing must be given to the patient.
· A bag valve mask must be properly sealed on the mouth of the patient, which will allow the person to inhale the oxygen.
Circulation Guidelines
When a person faces an emergency and experiences a cardiac arrest, the circulation process is affected, which stops the flow of blood to the heart. According to Pemberton et al. (2019), the Return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) is vital to make a person survive a cardiac arrest. The guidelines are as follows:
· Chest compressions must be provided to bring back normal circulation.
· The...
