Write a 5 pages paper about a movie's main character. Discuss the problems and difficulties they have . Are the problems brought on by the person? Your paper should indicate whether you believe the main character is mentally ill. If you believe he or she is mentally ill, describe the illness and give it a psychological diagnosis. ( refer to chapter 14 please the DSM 5 when making your diagnosis. If you do not believe the character is mentally I'll, please give reasons for their behavior. Introduction
The current essay discusses the film 'As Good as It Gets’, which highlights a common psychological disorder. In this film, the protagonist Melvin Udal who was introduced as a well-known novelist in New York City. Udal was observed to suffer from the obsessive-compulsive disorder and an enhanced form of misanthropy. His psychological condition has turned him against his neighbors and the people whom he met him. The essay will highlight the various symptoms of the disorder and the difficulties he faced. The essay will also explore the compulsive disorder and the different treatment options available to help similar kind of patients.
The Difficulties and Problem faced by the Character
Melvin Udal is a character who communicated with other people in the form of insults. These insults were not funny ones rather they were said in a way as if it was meant to wound people. As per Jaafar, his words that are been hurled to the people varied from sexist and racist comments to physical and homophobic insults. He used to take delight in hurling insults to most of the people he used to encounter. Further, the film also projects, that Udal had difficulties in physical interaction with people. He used to avoid human touch. In the film, there was one of the instances where Udal obstructs his waitress from to touch his hand while serving. Of all the things Udal is afraid of one of the aspects that he fears, are people coming to know that he is scared.
He lived a reclusive life and was a misogynist. Further, the film portrayed that Udal had homophobia, which was reflected in his intolerance towards Simon Bishop. He had an extreme racist attitude, which was evident from his rude and inconsiderate attitude towards Frank Sachs. There are certain behaviors that highlighted his obsessive-compulsive attitude in the film. He is observed to prefer sitting at the same table for his lunch. While having his food rather than utilizing the cutleries at the restaurants he prefers to bring his own plastic cutleries. He follows a rigorous ritual of locking his door where he used to turn one lock three times and the other five times before leaving.
Analysis of the Character whether He was Mentally Ill
Melvin Udal in the film showed his mental challenges in different ways. Firstly, his inability to be in a relationship kept him unfriendly and irritable most of the time.
