Is the study of astronomy useful?
Astronomy is the branch of science dealing with space. Astronomy has been a subject that has intrigued people both in the past as well as the present. In ancient times and until the discovery of telescope, people observed the world through their eyes and marvelled at the wonders of the universe. They had all sorts of myths and strange beliefs regarding what they could not see. Advancement in technology allowed us to see the universe from new angles and discover worlds that human beings had only imagined until recently (Kelley and Milone).
Even though human beings lacked technology, observations of the sky and the stars helped man in many ways. He discovered the use of calendars, maps and navigation through observing the sky and the movement of the moon and stars. Astronomy also helped predict weather and climate. The concept of time also evolved due to the study of astronomy. All these discoveries were made through observation with the naked eye. With the discovery of telescope and advancement in science and technology, things were taken to a whole different level (Kelley and Milone).
Astronomical studies mainly deal with the study of the cosmos. However, in the process of learning about the cosmos, we have learnt a lot of new things that have impacted, not only the way we see and record the world, but also the way in which we spend a lot of time in our daily lives. It is the study of astronomy that led to the technology of high-definition cameras used in most smartphones today. It is also through the communication systems developed for astronomy that communication systems like WLAN have been made possible. Scanning machines used in airports use technology developed by astronomers. Atomic energy, in the future, may possibly become a form of usable energy thanks to astronomy. Hence, limiting the study of astronomy to the skies is putting a limit on the various horizons of discovery made so far by astronomy (Jones). In my quest to learn more about the contributions of astronomy and the latest advancements in astronomy, I went through a few recent research papers and found amazing facts and findings that both bewildered as well as excited me.
