Write a response to one of the short stories covered in the short story section of the syllabus. The overall goal for this project is for you to explain why the story of your choosing speaks to themes that we have talked about in class.

Start with an opening paragraph stating why you chose to write about this story- what themes do you think the story effectively touches upon?

In the first paragraph, answer the following question: Do you think that the story you chose would have worked as a novel, play, film or do you think the short story format is the only fitting choice for the story to be told properly?

In the second paragraph, talk about which techniques you feel the author employs most effectively to pique readers’ attention and to keep the flow and momentum of the story going so that both the reader doesn’t lose interest and so that the story can be wrapped up pretty nicely.

Finally, in a third paragraph, what symbols/motifs/etc. stand out to you the most and do you think the story hinges on the importance of these symbols/motifs/etc. Why or why not? Can you relate any of these things to elements of the other literature we have read this semester?

Finish with a conclusion reiterating why you think this story is worthy of study and analysis in a class such as ours.

Introduction
The impacts of socio-cultural background affect the overall personality of human beings. At times, the shift from one cultural setting to the other makes them feel embarrassed about their past or the native culture especially in the atmosphere where two cultures conflict with each other. The approach of Amy Tan in her story Mother Tongue is similar to this typical conflict, which she has to go through. She belongs to a different culture and her family environment has a different language to speak.
Even after their formal adoption of English, there are indicators, which highlight how much she is literally ashamed over the deformity of culture in her life though, in the latter half of the story, she accept the fact that every culture has a unique feature and there is nothing to be ashamed about it. In mother tongue, stereotypical thinking of the author links well with the reality where social exposure and family life affect her thinking.
The Shape of the Story
At first, it is significant to note here that the overall structure of the story is analytical and narrative both at the same time. Amy has presented precise details of the linguistic expressions within the family as well as outside of it. There are several occasions in the story where she does not fail to present her opinion about the ‘changed forms of English’ that she has to accept in her family environment (Tan).
During this narration, there is thematic projection of the simple ideas, which are deep in meaning. The conversion of this story into a novel is difficult to imagine due to the lack of detailing of the plot....
