Introduction
There are many argumentative issues related with the genetically modified organism (GMOs) in the public domain where there are certain legal issues associated with. There is always an argument that the special rights should be provided only to one company or else it should be made available to all other companies. In this assignment the argument is made with respect to the patent rights that to be given to the company engaged in manufacturing genetically modified organism for the agricultural purpose. 
What is Patent and What is its Importance
The patent right is important because it helps in safeguarding the inventions made by someone. As discussed by Odzimek (2019) that patents are mainly designed for the purpose of meeting certain specifications according to the originality, practicality, suitability and the utility of the particular invention. In most of the cases a patent can protect an invention for a period of 20 years. Patents also provides the investor a period of exclusive rights for the commercial development of the products, thereby encouraging more innovation. As discussed by Jensen et al. (2018) that the development and the authorization of a new GMO plant costs around $136 million on average, and the companies engaged in agricultural activities would not have the willingness to make such an investment without a period of the exclusive rights and the profitability. However, in the long run the patent rights are not intended for providing the price of public interest.
