Introduction
The hospitality ind
ustry is one of the sectors, which was hit hard by pandemic. Governments around the world are taking aggressive steps to protect the industry because people, their livelihoods and economy of many countries are dependent on tourism and hospitality. As the recovery has started with the relaxed mobility norms and social distancing, two challenges are knocking the door:
(i) There is a need to become ethical employer and train employees to follow and adopt ethical work culture and practices and
(ii) There is a surge at global level for sustainability and needs active response from the hospitality industry.
As the industry is moving towards environmental consciousness, the challenges are getting more demanding because all these years the reputation of hospitality industry was not so good in terms of prioritising sustainability. Government interventions, competitor’s actions and consumers’ awareness and changing preferences have forced the industry to change their outlook towards the problem.
Ethical Frameworks
Teleological Theory
This theory states that no action is right or wrong. The results derived after taking an action are right or wrong. The judgement over the behaviour related to the action is right or wrong. The moral and the values associated with it are measured in terms of behaviour, as the result is the response to that behaviour. Therefore, it can be said that if behaviours are morally good then result obtained will also be good but if morally behaviour is bad then the result will also be wrong. Teleological theory is also known as consequentialist theory because its two groups— egoism and pragmatism— stress on results of the behaviour rather the goodness and rightness of the decision.
Deontological Theory
As per the theory, the characteristics of a person are more important as compared to intentions or the results. Deontological theory is independent of right or wrong or the result gained from the decision. The universal conditioning of right or wrong is the foundation of this theory and as a result, scope for exception is there. The behaviour of a person in particular situation is considered. It stress on social rights and therefore this approach can be divided into two parts namely justice approach and rights that emerge. In other words, it can be said that natural rightness of behaviours is referred as Deontological theory.
Relativity Theory
Due to experiences of group or individuals, their judgement capacities get affected. The ethical behaviour emerging as an outcome of such experiences is part of relativity theory. Different societies and communities have different ethical rules as compared to generic principles and ethics. This theory is also known as ethical relativism and if a person does something wrong or right morally then the credit goes to the culture he/she belongs to.
Case Study 1:
Until now, the hotels used to stress on fine dining, round the clock room service and clean sheets. However, with time, this model is getting old and sustainable vision is getting into mainstream as Gen Z has different plans and approaches towards it (Arab News, 2021). They are changing the taste of challenge and acting as future drivers by using technologies and innovation with more focus on sustainability.
A team of students suggested “Shared Economic Value through Co-living Cooperative Opportunities,” or SEVCCO, which will promote communal living with sustainability. This concept is also known as neo-hospitality and it will transform societies tremendously (Arab News, 2021).
Case Study 2:
Food business in hospitality industry needs ethical behaviours towards consumption of food because food crisis is prevalent in considerable ratio (New Food, 2020). Post-pandemic this situation has even worsen because operators are not aware about risks involved and unsustainable practices. For instance, the use of plastic should be replaced with eco-friendly...
