You are to experiment with the Enhanced Rebellion model.Click here to download the modelThe model modifies the cops' behavior: depending on the probability of imprisonment, the cop is more or less likely to arrest the activist. If the activist is not arrested, she ispacified--that is, asked to abstain from counter-governmental activity for the duration of max-jail-term (as if she were given a probation). For the duration of the probation, the activist is not participating in any rebellions.

The problem consists of three questions.

  1. In class we charted the jailed-active system trajectory for the Rebellion model. Assuming default values for all independent variables, run the Advanced Rebellion model for 500 ticks and then export the “All agent types” plot and chart the quiet-active system trajectory.Deliverable:the chart inExcel.

  2. For the default values of all independent variables, what is the smallest cop density that completely inhibits any protest activity? Run the model for at least 200 ticks. The average protest activity should never spike above zero. Convince yourself and me by exporting the “Average Protest Activity” plot and creating a graph of the average protest activity over time. Compare this density to the density of cops in the USA. Explain the difference or the similarity.Deliverables:an Excel data sheet and a Wordreport.

  3. "To gaol or not to gaol?" The additional display at the bottom of the model shows the average lifetime activity. Study how it is affected by the imprisonment probabilityP.Deliverables: an Excel spreadsheet and a Wordreport.

    1. Simulate the model for three different values ofP: 0 (always probation), 0.5 (arrest or probation), and 1 (always arrest) for three different types of government: despotic (legitimacy=0), autocratic (legitimacy=0.5), and democratic (legitimacy=1). Each of the nine simulations must be 500 ticks long.

    2. How doesPaffect the level of protest activity for each type ofgovernment?

    3. Did you expect to see theseresults? Explain.
