1) Analyze the role of gender in the film, and in particular in the relationship between Will and Skylar. How do gender role expectations affect the characters in the film? Do you see examples of men and/or women following gender norms? Breaking gender norms?


2) Analyze Will's group of friends as part of a subculture. What are the norms of this group of friends? How is Will affected by those norms? How are the norms related to class, gender, or any other larger cultural groups?


3) This film is about a series of conflicts -- within individual characters as well as between characters -- and many of those conflicts are related to class. Choose one or two of the major conflicts in the film and analyze the role of class in that conflict.

Conflict in Good Will Hunting
Directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (“Good Will
Hunting (
1997)”, n.d.), the movie “Good Will Hunting” can be considered as a true
representation of internal and external conflicts that often emerges due to the rigid social class
structure.
Internal conflict denotes the “complication that happens within a character; it may be a
moral dilemma the character is facing, or it may take the shape of a choice or a desire”
(Richards, n.d.). But in case of Will Hunting the internal conflict is related to class
consciousness. The primary internal conflict is noticeable within the central character of the
movie, Will Hunting. Hunting belong to the lower class and this can be ascertained by analyzing
his dwelling place which is a “sparsely furnished apartment in an impoverished South Boston
neighborhood” (“Synopsis for Good Will Hunting”, n.d.). Hunting is a mathematical genius but
it is his social class which never allows him to realize the potential within him. It has been often
found that people belonging to the impoverished class suffer from inferiority complex and they
feel less competitive in comparison to people belonging to the middle and upper classes. And in
