Mesoamerica is also where the Aztecs are thought to have originated. They first emerged in this area in the 13th century, as the south-central region of pre-Columbian Mexico (Healan Cobean & Bowsher, 2021). The Aztecs arrived after a brief period of time following the fall of a prior group that had controlled Mesoamerica, namely the Toltecs. The Aztecs were mostly successful in establishing a state. This state was the birthplace of a magnificent agricultural system. The Aztec community's agriculture was primarily centered on aggressively farming all accessible land. The agricultural strategy utilized also placed a strong emphasis on irrigating their property and all of the wetlands at their disposal in order to produce more crops than if they had simply used the undeveloped land.
